England v Australia Fourth Test player ratings 3:26pm on 09 Aug 2009 strauss - 3, cook - 4, bopara - 0, bell - 0, colly - 0, prior - 5, broad- 7, swann - 5, anderson - 0, harmy - 4, onions - 3.
ottis gibson - -5, selectors, flower and the 'back up staff' - 0.

for the oval:

we need 5 bowlers to take 20 wickets on a flattish track , so we need wicket-taking/pressure creating bowlers.

we do not need another freddie circus - he will have to be fit enough to be part of a 3 man seam attack as we will have 2 spinners.

cook,tresco/key/moores/denly, strauss, ramps, bopara, prior, flintoff, broad, swann, rashid, harmison. if flintoff is not fit then play sidebottom.
Edgbaston ratings 9:07pm on 03 Aug 2009 just looked at the bowling stats for england: flintoff avg 48, swann and broad 57! broad and swann are going at 3.5 per over so are neither penetrating nor containing. the aussies much maligned 'fab 4' have taken 40 wickets the same as our 6 bowlers combined. lets face it, one of the reasons we won at lords was because of the bizarre umpiring that cost the aussies at least 3 wickets: ponting, hughes and hussey.
Edgbaston ratings 8:34pm on 03 Aug 2009 cook 3, strauss 6 (decent knock but uninspired captaincy again, bopara 3, bell 5 (51 but lucky to get so far and got out again after half century), colly 2 (if KP had played that shot in the last over before lunch aggers, cmj et al would have never shut up about it all match and gordon brown would probably have made a statement - i recall colly got out slogging in the 1st innings at lords but he's a 'hard northerner so that's all right, prior 7 (man of match for england but a 40+ isnt enough, a number 6 needs to get double that), flintoff 6 (good knock against friendly bowling but no wickets) broad 5 (good knock yesterday but does strauss trust his bowling? dont forget harmy got 49 against the saffers last summer as well as blasting out their top order), swann 4 (2 wickets and 1 great over does not hide a poor performance today - hauritz looks better to me in terms of flight and variation. if he cant hack the pressure get someone in who can), anderson 6 (good first innings, poor second and too much lip, stick to bowling son), onions 6 (decent spell on friday but innocuous for the rest)

headingly team: cook, strauss, ramps, bell, colly, bopara, prior, flintoff, rashid, anderson, harmison.

lets be open and honest and admit we're playing for 2 draws now and pile up 600+ at leeds and the oval. colly and bopara can take broad's share of the overs.

Graham Gooch's England ratings 6:06pm on 11 Aug 2008 the reason we didnt at least draw the series was because the batsmen dont score enough runs - as simple as.

in the last 16 tests kp has scored 6 centuries with none of the others getting above 2. that is simply not enough and they may well be great in the dressing room and in the nets but we want 'dogs' who can follow kp's example and do it on the pitch.

we've only 8 tests before cardiff and i would use india and the windies trips to blood newcomers/players who deserve a go and then field the number one 11 against sri lanka which will be a real test.

KP was great in this series in terms of taking on the saffers and showing up their attack as ordinary but he MUST aim for 200 when he gets in not 100.

didnt want to harmy to play for england again but if he can play like this then watch out the aussies.

the saffers may have been demob happy bit some of harmy's bowling was top drawer.

coming out to bat against south africa at lords against dale steyn having cleaned up mv ....no pressure

taking on and ripping the sa attack apart at headingly and edgbaston (all too briefly)

what sets kp apart from ramps and hick etc is the ability to move up a gear when the pressure is on and to ignore a failure as a minor blip not a cause for endless soul searching.

by the way what balance will the team have on thursday: 4 bowlers wont do and 5 batters means one of strauss, bell, colly or bopara will be left out. bell to open?
Outstanding Smith deserves his success 8:40pm on 02 Aug 2008 well played to south africa even if the umpire did let smith off twice today (sour grapes? too right)

as for the oval - i would have a new set of bowlers- why flog freddie in a dead rubber and the other 3 must be knackered too. only 3 maidens for panesar in 31 overs bowling into rough not good enough.

vaughan does not inspire the troops anymore and his batting makes him a passenger - no wonder kp looks a bit jumpy waiting to go in.

great knock from colly but we need more 100s (ditto bell and cook)

ambrose lacks the batting mettle and needs to appeal louder when the ball hits the batsman's glove!

i still think the sa bowlers are in the main pretty ordinary - look at their averages this series.
