Lisbon: A Pandora's box 3:14pm on 30 Jun 2009 The Lisbon Treaty is long and complicated and seeks to impose rules for almost everything, as if the EU were a full federation, whereas in fact it is a fairly loose association of sovereign states. This is the key conflict in Europe right now. Some parties want a United States of Europe and others want a working cooperation between states on a level playing field without giving up their self-governance. My preference is the latter.

What we need in Europe is a simple statement of aims and objectives and of basic rights and responsibilities. It could be written on a few sides of A4 and could be based on the German model, the constitution of Germany being the only modern and truly democratic document, because it was drawn up afresh after World War 2 with the help of British and American experts. Germany also has a court - "Verfassungsgericht" - that interprets and defends the constitution. I am convinced that every state could sign up to such a simple and clear solution.
Big city blues 2:49pm on 20 May 2009 The article atarted off about Berlin, so let's go back to Germany. Hamburg is a much more vibrant, interesting and attractive city and its people are unique in the World. However Hamburg is also not typically German. Same goes for Cologne. You will find typical Germans in the Rührpott if anywhere, but even they speak with a funny accent. Munich and Bavaria? Forget it - a foreign country. A Bavarian and a Hamburger can not even understand each other's speech, let alone their ways of thinking.

I think the whole idea of "typical" is a myth.
Who will be the next star of Formula 1? 3:32pm on 08 May 2009 Right. GP2 is really exciting racing. The drivers are "hungrier" than those who have already made it into F1, and the series is very competitive. The last 2 years I have been to Spa-Francorchamps for the F1 Grand Prix and have watched the GP2 guys (In 2007 I was very impressed by Timo Glock, for example). In 2008 my girlfriend and I stood at the "Bus Stop" watching the action and the GP2 cars were just as much fun as the F1 cars.
My YouTube shame - part two 10:37am on 15 Apr 2009 I have a great idea. Don't send You Tube ANYTHING! Eventually they will start pleading with us to send them stuff. And if they don't, who cares? I certainly don't. I lived without You Tube for many years and I can do it again.

What know you of James Patterson? 2:40pm on 09 Feb 2009 If you want exciting, read Bernard Cornwell. If you want challenging try Richard Morgan's sci-fi with a difference. If you want erudition try Simon Scarrow. If you want action, go for Andy McNab. Each of these is a master of what he does. Patterson, unfortunately, is not. He writes to a formula.
Does this man remind you of anyone? 10:55am on 09 Jan 2009 #26 sorry, but your comments do not make sense. China got nuclear power and this was used by the US to stop the Japanese invasion of China? That is the most convoluted, cock-eyed view of history I have ever seen. The US developed their own atomic bomb with British help and dropped the thing on Japan to stop a bloody war which was killing many Japanese and Americans. I don#t think it was to stop the Japanese invading China and in fact the Japanese had already invaded China some time before.

You also say "He was a good leader during the war time, although he economy policy costed millions of people's lifes." His economic policy cost millions of people's lives but he was still a great leader? What do you have to do in China to be a bad leader? Again, backwards reasoning - he might kill you but that does not make him a bad leader. I give up. There is no reasoning with this sort of mentality.
Obama's intriguing CIA pick 11:04am on 08 Jan 2009 #47 and my post #42. Anyone with any experience of the Jesuits and Opus Dei gets nervous about them. I have first hand experience of both, shall we say, the Vatican Old Guard and the Cosa Nostra and they frighten me. When they are allied to the CIA watch out.

Previously this same alliance gave us the Bay of Pigs, an unsuccesful attempt on the life of Fidel Castro, a succesful coup against Allende and many other major attractions of the civilised world. That's my last word on the subject. Make your own minds up.
