The moment that this was introduced was the point in time when the Treasury took note of the fact that the total available finances of UK PLC were not enough to re-balance the debt.

I am looking forward to the final accounting for this period... when we can read some true figures of the actual amounts used. Only then will we be able to understand whether the Western Casino saved us from collapsing banks or abused us by supporting them and them only. My own experience would lead me to believe that the re-capitalisation of the banks has led to an abuse of the individual as well as a fundamental change in many previously believed ethical/moral rules.

I am loving the humour Robert, and a quick skim of the replies allows me a broader smile. There is absolutely no change on the horizon.... Bankers are bankers through and through, they see money as the measure of everything. Thankfully they are now being bought down a peg or two..... yet nowhere near enough for any new stability in future. The UK Government should have let them all go to the wall.
I have waited for over three years for my Bank to call me and "perform" their intended review of my accounts. They are useless, one and all. Every time I call them they tell me that they need the information.... poppycock!!
You should all know by now that there is no such thing, never has been, as SUSTAINABLE WEALTH. Thanks for lightening my day though, however unintended.
Now can you get on with announcing the plan that the IMF lends money to "everyone" to balance the books? That will be interesting. The CIA Factbook will be turning on its head. Normal service resumed I assume. You may have worked out that I think Bankers have a pungent odour .... I won't be hugging one anytime soon. :-)
Faith in banks 6:20pm on 20 Jan 2009 The time has come for the Establishment to move on with the rest of the world.
New Labour began their Government with a tiny but significant change to the way that they convinced the electorate to believe in them. Every previous election that I had seen, the politicians promised us all that tomorrow would be better with them. Labour changed that, they began the spin of "tomorrow will not be as bad if you believe in us".
You write about confidence Robert, yet confidence cannot exist with fear of the unknown. In this respect, the Banks and Government have wasted over 18 months. Wasted real time and our money whilst they should have been coming clean, with each other at the very least.
Last weeks Banking Select Committee was just another display.
If Brown cannot read the feelings of the populace, then that is his responsibility, but I for one am not going to sit and waste my life whilst his mistakes and idiocy create despair and fear. Every single individual who has taken their money out of the UK's Banking Institutions deserve respect, not contempt. The contempt in Parliament, as well as some of the force fed press reporting is a huge part of the problem.
If the UK wants confidence, then that arrives with positivity, truth and faith in the future. I left London in 1999 as a result of this same dumbing down..... down to the lowest common denominator. Tell us all something we don't know Robert. Ask the hard questions of the Establishment. What did Basle 11 achieve last year? Why aren't all these Bankers pushing for support in explaining their problems to the public?
You know why......... it has to be a smokescreen. The greedy and selfish no longer deserve to be hidden in society. The market is our collective response. Fear and ignorance need to end, from the top first!
How our banks were rescued 8:59pm on 22 Dec 2008 Bravo Robert. I have waited for years - my internet information society began in 1995. This blog has certainly bought serious reporting to the web. In some ways it is awful that it had to happen under such circumstances, yet for those who have watched from afar, it is high time that the public are given the immediate truth.... however difficult it may be to stomach. Shame that 12 months in we are all still feeling the pinch..... information rules.

Why punish savers? 11:16am on 04 Dec 2008 Perhaps it is high time that Politicians went and did a days work. In the real world. As Mr Curzon explains, anyone with half a mind is working now in the global economy. Hence if the UK is to survive the next few years, then it must compete with other economies.
The spin and incompetence from the Executive is now a total disgrace. Yesterday a minister admitted on the radio that she should not have quoted "real" figures for how many would be helped by the mortgage "holiday".... so why don't they stick to policy that they can sell competently to the populace?
They are ALL fiddling whilst Rome burns.
Capitalism is a game of winners and losers..... at present the UK is losing. This will continue whilst Parliament finds it more interesting to bicker and feed us sound bites. Even those who believed the spin are now realising that the present situation of UK PLC is that of a totally bankrupt business. Italy still hasn't recovered from its own "Empiric" destruction. Quack Broone to the rescue! Not.
Barclays' £300m gift 1:56pm on 19 Nov 2008 62, I agree with you. Seems that there are two old fashioned principles which are also still being yearned after by our "great" leaders....
1. That "controlled" information is good for us all.
2. That public confidence has no place in economic theory, yet will return to previous levels.
This time around, the internet has completely blown the power bubble of information.... and the public are no longer as brainless as we perhaps used to be.
This could be the first silent revolution. Welcome to Globalisation, where Fiat currency is supported by Fiat confidence. All very taxing indeed!

Can I repeat, this is all a result of the leveraging by banks to jump in to the investment market. They gambled with money that they did not have. Now UK PLC is trying to do the same. What a fiasco.

I am interested in whether the BBC is considering "their" internet as the world wide web..... with or without boundaries. Adobe are a US business, and therefore the use of the product obviously gives income to them. Yet still the BBC, and the law, regard the web as a place where borders are the same as countries. Hence the use of GeoIP. It will be quite a shame if in future the BBC's customers... UK license holders, are locked out of the content as soon as they travel to Europe. After all, the web should make no censorship based solely on physical boundaries. An alternative of MAC addresses could allow this to flourish, in the same way as I agree to your license to post comments, perhaps I could also be afforded access if I register my equipment as an opt in with the overall License Fee. With or without DRM this would be helpful.
How close to capitulation? 5:31pm on 06 Oct 2008 I propose that Mr Peston asks for an interview with the leading British bankers, and asks them collectively to come out and tell us where they believe they stand. The facts. If they won't, then as public businesses they totally deserve the lack of faith that the public now has.
They are still now playing poker with our lives.
This will eventually lead to not only less money deposited, but also many more unpaid debts as the public lose yet more confidence - or in reality lose their jobs. The perfect storm.
The last year has seen many empty promises, so where are the facts? I presume they do employ accountants... even for their off sheet accounting. They can all turn their cards over at the same time.... it would make for a great BBC prime time program, much better than waiting until the system free falls.
I am certain that I have never failed to pay my dues..... and I will not be paying the dues of my bank because they couldn't. They are the "experts", not I. Sadly, the politicians have a habit of doing the wrong thing.
