Quartet face relegation nail-biter 12:19pm on 23 May 2009 There is a quote taken from a book called Italia '90 - sorry can't recall exact wording but it goes somethinglike this football is not about justice, it is a drama and baddecisions are al part of the drama" In that context I think the relegation battle invooving 4 teams is indeed part of the excitement that is the Premiership - so as a neutral in this it is fascinating - better 6than any soap on tv !
Review of the week 5:25pm on 28 Jan 2009 Not seen any of your blogs before but thoroughly enjoyed this. Something about dry humourand the understated comment that is so good - anyone know if this type of humour is unique to us Brits ? - (that's an open question btw !!)
Back to the future again 5:28pm on 03 Oct 2008 I do not think Madelson comes over well on tv - he does seem to convey a "shiffty" image - maybe he could just about get by under Blair's wing, but with Brown, who also is extremely poor at presenting an acceptable tv face to the British public, I suspect incorporating Mandelson into the cabinet will simply begin to undo any little recovery Brown seemed to have been making over the past couple of weeks and will hasten the previous downward trend in the government's popularityl.
British banks bailed out 2:52pm on 03 Oct 2008 The question I want to know the answer to is whose is all this money that the Bank of England seems to be able to call upon at the drop of a hat? and where does it all come from ? Is it government money kept in trust by the BoE? If not government money whose is it? Also, how does all this tie in with what financial commentators call the national debt ? It is all very puzzling ! I just don't see why if all this money has been stashed away all this time why successive governments have felt the need to constantly raise taxes as if they were on skid row, why they ask people to tighten their belts etc etc when we now know all billions of pounds have been there all along. Sounds a bit to me too like the account in the bible of the parable Nathan the prophet said King David -in effect taking from the poor to fund the rich who already have more than enough thank you very much. Can Mr Peston do a blog please to answer these questions - am sure many will be grateful if he can - Thanks in advance
The long pursuit of Emile Mpenza 09:39am on 02 Oct 2008 I really loved this article - quite unlike any other I think I 've read on football. Unfortunately most writers about football somehow seem to forget that football is part of the real world and in so doing shroud the whole football world with some kind of an aura as if the people involved in it live in a different universe to everyone else. But this article rung true so my thanks to the writer for this - I really appreciated it.
How the financial crisis could hit London 2012 12:23pm on 01 Oct 2008 With respect to this, we should all bear in mind, and especially politicians, who often give predictions about the future (thinking that by doing so they can still people's various fears) - and if there is anyone in the Treasury reading this comment - this particularly applies to you guys - a line from a John Lennon song in which he is effectively offering adivce to his young son Sean

Catastrophic system failure 10:22am on 30 Sep 2008 I am surprised at some of the comments made on the bbc site. Many do not seem to recognise the possible implications of a few banks going to the dogs and a few fat cats losing their jobs. I am no economist and have never invested in stocks and shares, but by just using a little common sense even I can see that the possible "domino effect" of this will impact every one of us and the consequences could be anything from a minor inconveience for a few people to a global disaster resulting in the collapse of the world economic system. Not even oil rich countries are potentially immune as if their customers have no money - they will end up with a plentiful supply of oil but with no one able to buy. Only time will tell how this pans out.
Arsenal guarded over financial figures 11:01am on 22 Sep 2008 All public bodies - and this includes governments, political parties, football clubs and the like have somehow to negotiate the minefield of dealing with the media. Various approaches have been adopted - eg spin, trying to make friends with the media, ignoring the media completely. etc etc It seems to me that given the fact that the media is often both servant and master, and a very cruel one at that, the approach that the Arsenal board takes is about the only way one see that can handle this unforgiving "monster" that is the media - give them basic facts, rarely give them person to person interviews, and give out only essential information. So I applaud Mr Hill-Wood and the Arsenal board in adopting this approach of keeping information to a minimum.
New world, new Brown 3:32pm on 21 Sep 2008 Each time Mr Brown churns out the mantras "I am the best man to lead us through the economic crisis" and "I will do better" and "I am listening to your concerns" the more convinced he is not the best man, he will not do better and he is not listening. It is a basic principle of humility not to blow your won trumpet - surely Mr Brown, being the son of a christian minister should have learn that by now - but it seems he has not. This is only surpassed in crassness by his cabinet lackeys echoeing almost word for word these phrases - and I am so sure everyone can see they don't believe a word they are saying !
Clarke's 'private chat' 11:34pm on 04 Sep 2008 My apologies John Constable if I misread your original posting - I thought you had referred to English - when you meant British. But from what you have subsequently said - you actually do mean just England not UK ? Apologies again - in the past UK was often referred to as England - I believe Mr Churchill often said England, meaning UK, whereas it probably would not be acceptable nowadays.
