West versus east on Diageo jobs 11:14am on 29 Jul 2009 I'm just waiting for the Diageo corporate headquarters to move to Scotland? Was that not promised in a previous decade? Diageo clearly don't really care much about Scotland despite the fact that our whiskey gives them a massive amount of their revenue and profits.

Choose your strategy 09:38am on 29 Jan 2009 I too feel Alex Fergusson has to take some of the blame for bringing embarrasment on the Scottish Parliament.

Is he correct in his assertation that he votes for the status quo.

I thought the convention was
1)vote in favour of the government
2)vote in such a way that the parliament doesn't become the laughing stock of world politics.
In the long term 1:51pm on 02 Dec 2008 If I was a Lib Dem just now I would be pretty pissed. They seem to have really been ignore din the Calman Convention.

Maybe Tavish should think about jumping ship and joining the National Conversation. i'm sure the SNP would happily put a box on the ballot paper on giving scotland full fiscal autonomy.

The Lib Dems have once agian been stitched up by Labour and given an equal share in an unpopular comission. If somethign good comes out of it you can bet that the Lib Dems won't even be mentioned.
Nuclear exchange 4:55pm on 25 Sep 2008 The one main policy that I strongly disagree with is the SNP's policy against nuclear power. As an engineer I feel it is important we have a diverse energy mix and nuclear is a reliable part of that.

I support the SNP but I strongly disagree with their no nuclear stance - although I remain strongly against nuclear weapons.

I hope the people and hedge funds who shorted HBOS get stung badly.

Aggresive shorting is one of the main drivers of financial turmoil at the moment. I am not a fan of shorting companies at the best of times but right now it really aint cricket and just adds to the global credit crunch woes that everyone is suffering.

I'm pretty confident HBOS could have weathered out this storm without any real problems if it wasn't for them clearly being picked on as an easy target.

If you trade on shorts I hope you are crying into your lunch this afternoon rather than dancing gleefully like I'm sure you were at breakfast.

For the record I have nointerest in HBOS at all dont even have an account with them.
Tavish's tactical tax tester 3:59pm on 15 Sep 2008 I'd much rather see a cut in business tax rather than a cut in income tax. We need to foster growth in our economy as we are playing catch up with England. A drop in business tax would encourage business growth in Scotland over the UK.

A cut in Income tax would either cut vital and important services or expenditure such as schools and roads or just annoy the freeloaders in this country who would face picking up less dole and incapacity money each month so wouldn't be able to buy as much buckie as they used to.
Business as usual? 2:56pm on 28 Jul 2008 I just looked at this forum for the first time in a few days and I loved reluctant ex-pats post #263 so much that I just had to respond!

People would argue against you on this but I would agree there has only been a slight increase in support over the last 18months.

The National Conversation isn't that well publicisied, I bet you if you asked 100 people in Glasgow East about it 50% wouldn't have heard of it. 2% of the population is pretty good going for any government document. And anyway - I didn't read the white paper on devolution but I still voted for it!

This is a lovely unionist scare tactic. Could you please tell me the number of years in the last 50 where the UK government has run at a surplus? Borrowing in the uk is tens of billions per annum and increasing fast. Borrowing in Scotland would be in the low billions. Almost every goverment in the world runs at a deficit (with the exception of several oil producing nations). Borrowing is also rarely a bad thing, most companies do the same thing (known as gearing in finance).

Oil prices are not dropping year on year and show no sign of doing so anytime soon. That is a stupid comment and comparing a months variation with years wouldn't be attempted by a primary school statistician.

It is quite correct that oil production is dropping. It dropped at it's fastest rate for a decade 2 years ago, surely that had nothing to do with Brown doubling the tax!?

"As always, there is no logic to the..." unionist "...argument." Just lies and scaremongering.

You guys (and the labour party) need to change tactic. An agenda of hope will always overcome those trying to depress and belittle people and there country.

For the record I am not a nat youth. I'm past the youth stage and have no affiliation to the SNP.
Duly elected 11:40am on 25 Jul 2008 I'm amazed by labour.

After last may many in the labour party said they deserved to lose and that their campaign tactics were wrong. The campaign of hope from the SNP thrashed the campaing of pulling down the opposition from Labour.

Just over a year later we have the labour party making the exact same mistakes. Do they ever learn? ..well no, take this morning for example.

Margaret Curran:
"I regret that I did not win for Labour tonight. I do believe the Labour party has to listen and has to hear the message from the people of Glasgow East."

Well done sounds great until good morning scotland this morning where I heard Neil Girffiths say:
"I found myself on the doorstep ... people reluctant to look me in the eye - saying they were not voting Labour", he said. "They were quite clearly Conservative and Liberal Democrat voters who were voting for the Scottish Nationalists."

That is a load of rubbish. And shows that Labour clearly haven't learnt any lessons at all. The conservatives remained solid and the lib dems didn't lose many voters. The protest vote was against his own party.

Until labour really learn their lesson and don't just pretend they have learnt it they will be in opposition for a long time.

The SNP's agenda for change and their agenda of hope gathers pace. Congratulations John Mason, I never expected to hear about victory this morning!
