Women still on top 09:56am on 12 Sep 2009 I read many of the responses on a different blog that specifically dealt with the progress made by the women's football team. Some (quite a few) appeared to be out of the dark ages. "Football is a man's game" "My local pub team could have beat them" that sort of thing. I agree with the first poster, the BBC should have given the Women's Euro' Championship more coverage. Reaching a major final is no mean achievement, gender should not be an issue. Well done to Hope and her 'girls' you did well. Fabio Capello is being lauded as the new saviour for merely *qualifying.*

Good luck to NI and Eire, the only two nations from 'these islands' for want of a better phrase who have a chance of joining England in SA. The more the merrier, I say.

I actually think fans in England are more passionate about club than country. It is fine to say their is great interest when England are sailing through their WC qualifying group, but a few defeats will dampen fans' ardour. Most club fans are used to defeat. Many have gone decades without a hint of a trophy but still they turn out, buy the merchandise etc. As for some counties being more "passionate" than others, listen to Neil Young's "Flags of Freedom."

Brazil were frankly 'fortunate' to get the win over Egypt in match one,
Egypt then beat a poor looking Italy only to get humped by USA who had been the clowns of the group. So while yes, you can argue Brazil have three wins from three...but against what exactly? The club football mantra of 'grinding out wins' has transferred to the International stage and in that respect my symapthies lie with Pele.

It beggar's belief! Even the most unscrupulous estate agent would be choking on their lunch. The only comparison between Owen and Ronaldo is an uncanny knack of falling like a stone once they saw the penalty box.
