Laws a victim of Wednesday's lofty aspirations 00:13am on 14 Dec 2009 As a Scunthorpe fan I have nothing but admiration for Brian Laws and I wish him all the very best in his next position. Moving to Wednesday was always going to be difficult and I think that he has managed to bring some stability to the club - given more time this season I am sure he would have got them out of their current predicament.

We would take him back, but our old physio is doing a grand job in continuing the rollercoaster ride it is being a Scunny fan over the last few years - haven't enjoyed myself so much ever!

Anyway - Merry Christmas Brian, have a few weeks off and get back into the game - wish you all the best mate.
Disarray over plans to immunise under-fives 7:37pm on 08 Dec 2009 What a nightmare - I thought we had been told a few weeks ago that a deal had been struck - it seems that one side or other has moved its position since.

But then again, why a deal in the first place? This is a scandelous situation where patient care is being placed second to profit. Whether it is the price per jab, or the insentives lost for not keeping the 48 hour appointment deal, at the end of the day it is about money.

If the GPs are not careful then the government may legislate against them in future to safe guard the distribution of essential vaccines.
Christmas shopping: Online v High Street 5:11pm on 07 Dec 2009 @8 - Nice post! Exactly the reasons I avoid the high street as much as possible.

The only things I do not buy online are clothes - consequently I hardly ever buy any new clothes anymore!!

This year, all my Xmas Shopping is now done and I have not made a single trip to a real shop. Online shopping has made Christmas shopping a pleasent experience for me and it also means that I get exactly what I need rather than having to make do with whatever I can find in a shop.

Long may this continue!
Facts about file-sharing 03:42am on 30 Nov 2009 Some people here seem to think that it is their right to have the music they want for free. How on earth do they come to that conclusion. If someone creates something and decides to sell it, then they should be protected by law to allow them to do so. It doesn't matter how much it costs to make or how much profit is made, market forces will determine if they have priced it correctly. As other posters have said, not paying for these products is morally wrong whichever way you look at it.

It is however this last point where many record companies need to ponder. They are obviously getting it wrong and they need to look at the cost of the products they are producing. You will NEVER stop people from copying music and video, the problem is too far gone for that. They need instead to concentrate on making their products more attractive and easy to buy. The record companies had the chance when the internet became popular to change their model, embrace the technology and make money out of it. They didn't because they were scared of it and did not understand it. Instead they fought against it and lost, yet they are still fighting against it. They will not win their war with these tactics.

Also I will reiterate a point I have made on many of these discussions. Files sharing itself is neither illegal or unlawful. Sharing copyrighted material IS unlawful. File sharing is a very important method of legitimately distributing electronic media. It is a point of semantics, but the quotes in the article mention File Sharing as being a problem, when they should be saying 'unauthorised file sharing'.
The Digital Economy Bill - does it add up? 5:23pm on 23 Nov 2009 Within minutes of this bill becoming law someone will be round the corner from no.10 Downing Street (or another prominent MPs palace) using their WIFI to torrent a few choice files.

I have been in the IT industry for nearly 25 years now and I haven't heard anything as ludicrous as this in all this time (and that is saying something).

Trying to stop illegal/unauthorised file sharing or trying to prove beyond doubt who the perpetrator was is never, ever going to happen.

The next thing this lot will try and do is say they are putting an end to prostitution or going to democratise Afghanistan - ah...

Mandy has obviously got the clout to bring in a few favours from his mates - otherwise he would not got anywhere near the government again, yet alone be made a Lord. I find it quite funny really as it is the kind of thing you expected from the Tories in the 80's - Keir Hardie would be turning in his grave...

I read the other day that having an unsecured wireless link may not be a good defence as it is the line owner's responsibility to make sure that wireless broadcast equipment attached to it is secure.

That's a bit like someone stealing your car to commit a crime and you being prosecuted for failing to secure it properly!!

This government makes me laugh really - spends a fortune on advisors and then ignores them all when they don't advise what the goverment want to hear!

This latest bill, rather than based on sound advice and what is achievable sounds more like one drawn up over brandy and cigars on a big 'entertainment industry' moguls yacht somewhere!
The Digital Economy Bill - does it add up? 08:47am on 22 Nov 2009 First of all, I hope that the bill refers to 'illegal file sharing' and not just 'file sharing'. There is an important distinction. Just because you use a peer-to-peer network to share files does not mean you are doing so to infringe copyright. If it does make the distinction in the bill then your following comment needs to be clarified;

'...first of all internet service providers would have to send out letters to those spotted file-sharing on their networks.'

It may seem a point of sementics, but it is an important point.

As to policing this - it's virtually impossible and is actually seems to me to be just a political statement from those who do not understand the technical committment in trying to do this properly. To make sure that letters are only sent out to those who have shared a file illegally would mean analysing each and every file that has been shared - ISPs will certainly not be able to bear the cost of this. Even then, with the knowledge that the offence has been committed, ensuring that the actual person who perpetrated the crime is prosecuted would then also be virtually impossible and costly. As to the comment from Stephen Timms that "90% of the ISP market supported the policy" - I very much doubt it, I would love to know how he worked this number out!

The next part that interested me was;

"Digital 'safety measures' to stop firms registering domain names for illicit use"

I have not read the bill (and perhaps I should), but I certainly want to know more about this. How is 'illicit use' defined? If you register a domain that you think might be quite popular and then use it for Domain Parking, is that then illicit? I can understand this if it is simply to stop people buying a 'trademarked' name site in the hope of selling it back to the trademark holder - although I believe there is enough legal precidence hear to allow succesful procecution anyway?

I think that the telephone tax (or something like it) is the only way we are going to get the investment for a decent broadband infrastructure in this country. The only sad thing about this is the governments lack of ambition in this area. The broadcast and communication industries are going to make heavy use of the internet in the not so near future and it is important that we have the infrastructure to support it if we are not to be left behind.

At the end of the day this seems like another smoke and mirrors bill from this government that will not actually achieve very much but will get them some press in the run up to next year's election.
So, the Czech was not in the post 11:05am on 04 Nov 2009 I feel a bit sorry for Mr Cameron here. What would be the point of holding a referendum after the event on this matter? It is THIS governments fault that we have been force marched into something that is likely to turn into something very nasty indeed (especially if it involves that horrible Mr Blair chap).

If any referendum is held at all when the Tories come to power next year it should be to decide if we want to stay in Europe or not. I for one will be voting for a swift exit - I just cannot see any benefit at all to being part of this squabbling bunch of misfits. Surely history should have told us that we in Europe simply cannot get on!

1. It is up to the Roayl Mail how it uses it's workforce.
2. It is up to the Royal Mail how much it pays it's workforce.
3. It is up to the Royal Mail when and how to modernise it's processes.

I have never, ever worked anywhere where it is the work force who decide any of these things. Sure, ask the work force what they think, but in the end the management decide.

If you work for the Royal Mail and do not like any of these things, do what any of us in private industry would have to do and GO AND GET ANOTHER JOB.

The strike is self defeating and does not have public support. You are contributing to the downfall of my business and many others by taking this action. The unions have sensed a weakness in the government and are capitalising on it - it will be their last chance to flex their muscles before we get a decent government next year. You think I am angry about this srike, you bet I am.
Robbo's England World Cup squad 00:46am on 16 Oct 2009 Agree with your squad but wouldn't take Rio - never liked the arrogant so and so - vastly overrated in my opinion.

As for Beckham getting MOTM yesterday - I think Brucie was correct. Until he came on the pitch we were pretty average - looked like a team that knew we had qualified and didn't really want to risk it. Even if you take away his obvious skill and passing abilities, the sheer passion that Beckham has for England seems to spread through the team when he comes on.

@303 - "stunning that most people don't actually know how fifa rankings work" - personally I would be even more stunned if anyone knew how anything worked that comes out of FIFA!

Can't wait for the summer and seeing who is actually fit to pick - I'm going to get my old boots out of the loft just in case!
