Why do I find the US view of attacking Iran so frightening? Simple, it is. Iran is a major power, well armed and strong, 70 million people living in a country, two and a half times the size of France, vast areas of mountain. desert, lot's of places to hide things and people. A country who are, by and large, behind their leadership or enough behind their leadership that if attacked they will cause serious damage to their attacker. The Israelis would do well to recognise that they have a population of only 7.5 million crammed into a very small space (target).

In a way I could almost hope the Israelis do attack Iran, it will probably be the last thing the Israelis do or will at least force them to negotiate honestly with the Palestinians. The only problem with that is the US, because of it's foolish Israel right Arab wrong mindset, will probably get drawn in and then Britain and the maybe even Europe. So best we pray that Obama can rein in the Israel pit bulls before they bite off something more than they can chew.

What is this drivel? What country are you talking about? It certainly isn't anything close to the UK I know sunshine. Clubs Mayfair? Sounds very 1950/60's maybe. Come on, outdated stereotypes are really just too boring. It's like all the Swiss sitting on mountain tops yodelling and making cuckoo clocks instead of getting all upset about the planning application for a minaret down the road.

By the way you never answered my question on post #246 what was the vote please was it 57% of a 55% turnout? Did I get that right?

All joking aside I'm glad to see that someone is actually being positive and making suggestions to improve the beast rather than just trying to find ever more convoluted reasons for and ways of leaving.

I suggest that the only way to address the problem of low voter turnout is to make voting mandatory, subject to a fine but with one position on the ballot paper marker clearly 'No Confidence' I've thought this for some time and think that it should be applied to UK ballots as well. The UK could also do with a major overhaul of the whole corrupt surrounding The Whips and freedom to vote. I'm not sure what procedures exist to remove an MEP but would suggest they need to be looked at and made more easily applicable by the electorate.

I read this in your post and took a long time to stop laughing. I'm not by the way a socialist but when I compare the brutal bulldozing of everything that got in her imperious way to poor Mr Brown oppressive and authoritarian, Ye gods, compared to La Thatcher he's a babe in arms.

Do me favours, get real here, stop all this high falutin' talk of convention and the like and commitment to referendums. They are politicians for god's sake 'snake oil salesmen' professional liars, benders of the truth, the majority are either lawyers or economists need one say more. The thought of the Tory party having the moral high ground is just too weird for words.

I don't think you are going to find much support for Michel Barnier he is disaster and should never have been given the job. He is protectionist and will favour France in preference to Europe in general. As a Brit who lives in France I view Michel Barnier only slightly more favourably than people like Daniel Hannan UK MEP and the odious Nick Griffin MEP and leader of the BNP.
Europe need strong non partisan leadership and in my view it's not going to get it from M Barnier.

Re 199 It seems to me that Me_rijn has rather shot your boat out of the water. So many of the undemocratic EU claims seem to be of this nature solid on the surface and then when one probes a little the case falls apart.

The fact that citizens of the EU failed to exercise their democratic right to vote does not invalidate that vote merely makes them foolish. As far as running any country or organisation by referenda is concerned it's still a non starter. Ok for votes on minarets, as repulsively Islamophobic as it maybe, but to run a country? I think not. Stop clutching at straws we have the EU, it's ours if it doesn't work properly let's fix it not throw out the baby with the bath water.
