Face-to-face with Paul Gascoigne 12:22pm on 24 Mar 2009 Hello Victoria,

My name is Peter.

I used to be a surgeon but I became disabled and blind with MS.

I had to retire from surgery and then for six months, went into psychiatry as the only clinical specialty that can be done with impaired vision.

I have now left psychiatry partly because the patients in the inpatient setting have little or no insight into their symptoms and as they believe there is nothing wrong, are non compliant with treatment.

The treatment is then forced on them with judicious use of the mental health act

Not surprisingly they view us, the doctors and nurses, as the enemy. This provokes hostility and abuse, sometimes violent and sometimes very personal, i'm sure you can imagine the form it took with me being a wheelchair user. This aggression was by no means a daily occurrence but occurred often enough to be one of the reasons i am looking elsewhere for work.

I think this clip of Paul Gascoigne could benefit many sectioned patients and help them gain insight, well done Paul, how incredibly brave of him. And well done you (Victoria) for enabling him to come out and say such important words.

This is journalism at its finest.

I have forwarded the link to the senior psychiatrists where i worked in case it could be used in a therapeutic and or educational manner.

While i am here, do you have any suggestions for a career for me?!

I laughed when I read this because non 'citizen journalism' is so poor now.

I am not a journalist, but always thought the accuracy and impartiality were the central principles. Unbreakable.

I am a dr and so know a bit about that , whenever I read about medicine or even articles on the politics of the nhs I am appauled at how there are so many simple factual errors.

This is always worsened by 'magazine' type journalism be it in a magazine or on the radio.

The people who run these things need to get a grip and not just let things be said in the name of free speech otherwise journalism becomes the hateful voice of an angry mob.
