Appetite for fat cat taxes? 10:37pm on 30 Nov 2009 Typical wooly Lib-Dem thinking. How can it be justified to tax a two million pound home, (say housing an extended family), but not tax someone who has two million pounds in cash in the bank to the same extent, or who owns two different one million pound homes. I earn 35K, if I inherit a two million pound home from my parents, where exactly am I supposed to find £20,000 to pay taxes every year. I'd be bankrupted by inheritance.... Fair taxation MUST be based on INCOME, not on property bought with money on which tax is already paid.

The assumption that all owners of such properties have high incomes is niave beyond belief. Round by me there are plenty of two million pound properties (called FARMS as we don't all live in London) where the owners have quite low incomes and would be put out of business by something like this.

Pathetic, clueless, headline grabbing gesture, and shows the Lib-Dems are simply unfit to be in charge of the countries finances.

Bye-bye to my vote.
Microsoft: 'No bounce' 10:58pm on 05 Oct 2009 Robert to state that "There's a broad consensus that economic recovery is under way more-or-less everywhere" seems to indicate you have learned nothing from the events of the last 18 months. Of course you get a boost when you have virtually free money available and a massive fiscal stimulus.

But its just another credit fuelled bubble, just like the last one. There is no underlying reason for a sustained improvement. There is negligable wealth creating industry in the UK to underpin it.
House prices: Too good to be true? 7:46pm on 02 Oct 2009 There is nothing to celebrate about the return of the house inflation bubble. Too many people have relied on price growth over time to reduce the value of huge mortgages.
Too bring stability back to the market, and steer house prices to their correct level, I would legislate to stop "interest only" loans. This would prevent people taking the high risk strategy of this type of mortgage. If that forces prices down the so be it. It would merely indicate they are presently overpriced.
The market price of cutting airline emissions 11:06pm on 22 Sep 2009 The airline question will solve itself. We are now likely to be just past "Peak Oil" and the oil supply has begun its slow terminal decline. The high cost of liquid fuels in the future will self-limit air travel, since you can't run planes on coal (the main fossil fuel of the future)
The real G20 breakthrough 6:03pm on 07 Sep 2009 Robert, you just don't seem able to get yourself out of your own old-style thinking. The challange is not to regulate bonuses because bonuses encourage risk taking. The challenge is to regulate against risk taking itself. This is relatively easy to achieve via capital ratios.

The argument that restrictive capital ratios will force business elswhere is bogus. It will just force high-risk taking elsewhere, which is good. London does not want to hold the baby again.

When risk taking is in check, bonus culture becomes irrelevent.
Can governments squeeze bankers' pay? 1:05pm on 04 Sep 2009 I don't think the issue is bankers pay as such. I think banks need to be forced into more sensible behavior by means such as capital ratios. This in turn removes the scope of top bankers for risk taking, and makes those positions more mundane in nature. So we don't need "top blood" to fill them, and remuneration will reduce naturally.

Bankers who think they can do better can move to hedge funds where tax-payer bucks are not at risk. Close the door when you go. Shareholders and investors can then choose the level of risk and reward for those people, but the taxpayer is not footing the bill.

Once the taxpayer is out of the loop, I cease to care what they are paid.
What future for media and journalism? 00:12am on 30 Aug 2009 The BBC is a bloated state monopoly full of overpaid fat-cats that need a cull. Theerguements put forward to presereve it on the grounds of quality are bogus.

The fact that a market exists for quality news and information will ensure that it is provided by the private sector. The FT is good example of this in practice.

I DON'T TRUST THE NUMBERS

What is hidden off-balance sheet? Without knowing that how can we have any faith in the company and, what's more, value their shares?
Treasury forecasts £77bn loan losses for Lloyds and RBS 10:13pm on 22 Jul 2009 I just don't get it.... logic to me dictates that the public purse should not incurr ANY loss. Banks should be taxed at 100% until all monies loaned, invested, bailed etc is 100% paid back. Then the shareholders get their companies back and not before. Is that too much to ask? I don't care how many years that takes, if this government had a backbone they would do it.

Goldman-Sachs can't "make" money, it creates no wealth. Every dollar of its profit is a dollar less in someone elses account.
