Rescuing the economy, not banks 10:03am on 19 Jan 2009 Robert, surely in the long-term what our economy needs in order to compete internationally is a moderate level of debt, and a sustainable (and affordable) level of house prices.

Doesn't the scale of these proposals, and the mad focus on propping up the housing market rather than the real economy, put us in a terrible position for the eventual global recovery?
Does the Bank Rate matter? 10:15am on 08 Jan 2009 It's not even complicated. Money needs to flow, from whatever source, to those businesses that make a real contribution to Britain's wealth and will do so in the future recovery.

At the same time, it needs to be impressed upon ministers that it SHOULD NOT flow in the quantities it used to to those businesses which in the long-run make us all poor, that is to say, should not be used to make individuals more indebted to buy tat they don't need from abroad, and absolutely should not be used to prop house prices up at stupid levels.
Repossessions 'to rise to 75,000' 3:01pm on 03 Dec 2008 I hope the Government is also looking at ways to prevent the trauma of people becoming homeless when they lose a job if they rent, not just for those who have been able to buy. Housing benefit is a wholly inadquate system, if this is the objective!
Treasury's mortgage rescue plan 3:37pm on 29 Jul 2008 Someone points out above that net lending has fallen 45%.

Think about that for a minute.

Net lending has fallen. It's not negative, it's just halved.

We are still borrowing more than we are paying back, even with the so-called credit crunch.

No way should the Government make it easier to borrow until we have spent a little while paying back what we have already borrowed!
