Some initial space notes 8:34pm on 15 Jul 2009 Yes, but what if an acronym spells an actual word? Eg (some space related examples for you):
- Egret: Energetic Gamma Ray Experiment Telescope
- Emu: Extravehicular Mobility Unit
- Near: Near Earth Asteroid Rendezvous
- Pam: Payload Assist Module
- Soho: SOlar Heliospheric Observatory
- Span: Space Physics and Analysis Network
- Tea: Torque Equilibrium Attitude

Could be confusing, especially at the beginning of a sentence. Probably need to send this back to the society of sub-editors (SOS?) for adjudication.

And at what point does an acronym like SCUBA or MODEM start getting treated as a word - eg, scuba and modem? Or radar? Sounds like a right old SNAFU to me - or should that be Snafu? Or snafu? Now I am confused...
Who's watching you? (1) 12:13pm on 09 Feb 2009 As a journalist who has reported on the CCTV industry for many years, I believe this hand-wringing about the intrusiveness and potential damage of CCTV is based largely on hypothetical fears.

In the wrong hands, CCTV could be abused. In a totalitarian state, people may find themselves being monitored but, thankfully, we live in a democracy.

In my experience, public CCTV is used for monitoring crime and disorder and providing an extra layer of protection for the public - exactly what it's supposed to be doing.

There is precious little evidence that our public CCTV systems are being abused, and given this lack of evidence, I'm not sure that more regulation is necessarily the answers.

I would rather see more effort going into making these systems more effective which is the aim of the National CCTV Strategy.
BBC and the Gaza appeal 8:58pm on 24 Jan 2009 Mark Thompson blithely asserts that the BBC has turned down requests for appeals in the past, but he doesn't provide us with any details.

So let's be clear: What DEC appeals has the BBC turned down and what were the reasons in each case?
On target? 2:23pm on 10 Jul 2008 Evan - always been a great admirer of your work. Economic questions are too important to be left to journalists who are not specialists in the subject and as the economy is a frequent topic on the Today Programme, it's great to hear you on the show, as a regular presenter, giving the politicians some aggro in response to their evasive non-answers.

(Consider this a response to Elstevester's comment).

With depressing regularity, we listen in vain for a politician to give a straight answer to a straight question. I can see why Caroline Flint didn't want to answer the question about house prices: whatever she answers, she imagines someone will be upset. Truth is, if she gave a straight answer to a question, any question, we would be so stunned we wouldn't know what to do except applaud her for speaking her mind.

Sadly, that isn't going to happen. When it comes to the relationship between politicians and the media, I'm afraid it will always look like a case of the greyhound chasing the rabbit: the rabbit usually wins because the rabbit is running for its life and the greyhound is only running for its dinner.
