For too long, managerial staff have often gained bonuses based on their subordinates' work. In this case, they should get no bonuses. If any staff remain who were responsible or who condoned the kind of behaviour that led to the losses, they should be penalised if possible. If they choose to leave, so be it: do people think they will be in demand given their past performance? Similarly to those who leave if they get no bonuses: if they are so money-orientated by bonuses, then let them leave: their desires may have led them to condone or turn a blind eye to sub-optimal decisions in order to maximise their chances of getting a big bonus, which, in this case, was a gamble that didn't pay out. A bonus is "icing on the cake", and if the behaviour is bad, no icing and probably no cake either.
Liu Xiang out 2:16pm on 18 Aug 2008 Very sad and unfortunate. But if he is ill and cannot run without aggravating a medical problem, he is better off withdrawing, which is what he did. Let's hope he recovers well and quickly, and that we see him again in other competitions in the future.
Which sports would you add to the Games? 2:19pm on 09 Aug 2008 Setting aside the obvious ones, like "Heading the shot" and "Catching the javelin", I suppose one might more seriously consider what physical attributes or senses are currently under assessed in the activities included so far. How about making use of hearing more in extra games? A "blind version" of a coconut shie might be a basis: the throwers cannot should have their eyes covered so they can't see, and the coconuts should emit a sound which would be the only aid permitted to help the aim of the thrower. Various tweaks to this basic setup could improve upon it, but this might be one example.
