Schumacher return looking increasingly likely 2:37pm on 11 Dec 2009 I for one would love it if he did come back. I was disappointed to see him retire after the 2006 season, particularly with Lewis coming in so strong. Even if it's for one season only, it'd be worth having him, just for the Lewis vs Schuey battle.

Sportsman he most definitely isn't (Adelaide 94 and Jerez 97 just two examples which point to this) but as a racing driver, quite arguably the best there has ever been. I also doubt he'd come back if he didn't think he could still do it.

We await with anticipation, Mr Benson..

Review of the week 2:20pm on 27 Nov 2009 About Beckham - I'm extremely surprised to learn his usage of an asthma inhaler. As a fellow sufferer myself, I found it very hard growing up to fully participate in games lessons because of it. The only odd thing I find about it is that it's taken until he's 32 for it to be discovered by the public. Maybe the high altitude of the game had something to do with it as wasn't the game played in somewhere like Denver?

There is a good question which someone threw up earlier about the groundshare about where they sat for the derby. The answer is simple: one match is designated as a 'home' match for Liverpool and the other as the 'home' match for Everton. Split the tickets halfway and have one half of the ground full of Red and the other half full of Blue.

For normal home games, for example, Everton at home, the away fans can have a portion of the Liverpool section and vice versa. Only problem with that could be segregation issues, but I think the idea of a groundshare in general is much more plausible and appealing then either Liverpool's new airport terminal or Everton's rejected IKEA stadium.

Liverpool fans also question if Everton would be able to fill the ground. Perhaps we wouldn't as I would concede we attract less fans than Liverpool but plenty of Blues don't go because of the facilities at Goodison. A new stadium would be a much more attractive experience and I think we'd get quite a number of fans going more regularly. If we had a 70,000 seater stadium I think we would be able to attract at least 60,000, given that some don't go purely on the basis they're watching behind a pillar for the entire match.

KEIOC protested over the move not only because of the boundary issue but of other parts of the scheme that simply didn't add up, such as the diabolical transport scheme that suggested up to 1000 Evertonians would be getting to the ground by bicycle! Now, I'm not sure how well you know North Liverpool but the infrastructure isn't there like it is in another footballing city, Rotterdam, to support it. It was utterly ludicrous and I'm glad John Denham has had the nouse to throw the application out.

Maybe the groundshare scheme is the way to go. With no exclusivity agreement in place now Kenwright can talk to Bradley all he wants, now.
The decline of LaDainian Tomlinson 10:42pm on 06 Nov 2009 Neil,

I can't agree with the phrase "He has been a tremendous athlete over the years, is a wonderful role model and is a down-to-earth, all-round nice guy."

Let's cast our minds back to the AFC Divisional Playoff in 2006, when New England came from down 8 late in the 4th quarter thanks to some shocking playcalling from Marty Schottenheimer. Among others, Tomlinson showed a real lack of class in the post-game press conference accusing the Patriots players of disrespecting San Diego and showing a real lack of class, which perhaps stemmed from the head coach.

Then again, his professionalism (or lack thereof) showed through in the week following Spygate, where he accused the Patriots of "not trying if they're not cheating". This was just after the Chargers had barely scraped a win in the opening game and Tomlinson had had his worst game for a good while. As a result, the Patriots fired themselves up and opened a can of whoop-ass on San Diego strolling to a 38-14 victory and holding Tomlinson to a career-low 43 yards rushing.

Then there's the AFC Championship game in 2007, played in frosty Foxborough where Tomlinson cried off the whole game with a stubbed toe while quarterback Philip Rivers played the entire game with an ACL injury he had suffered the previous week against Indianapolis, and despite losing, earnt the respect of virtually the entire league, including I suspect many Patriots. So while I concede he is indeed a great athlete, he is sadly not the professional you make him out to be.

thanks for clearing that up. Personally, I think that is a shame that Italy have decided to give the majority of the Olympics to pay-TV. The Olympics is all about the world uniting as one through sport, where no-one is excluded. I don't have Sky at home and never have - I would not be nearly as interested in the Olympics, or indeed the Paralympics, if I couldn't see the likes of Eddie the Eel, Usain Bolt, Kathy Freeman, and indeed, our very own Becky Adlington, Tom Daley, Sarah Storey and David Weir; the feel-good stories, which is what makes the Olympics better than any other sporting event in the world.

your point about Italy is a little wide of the mark, I believe. I was living in Italy during the Winter Olympics in 2006 in Torino and almost all the coverage was on the main free-to-air network RAI. Granted, this was different for the World Cup. However, despite all matches being on SKY, Rai and Mediaset still carried most matches.

I still remember this as sport in the media formed my university dissertation, so reading your entry here is something that's of particular interest. I personally believe that the Government will not allow the Olympics to have restricted free-to-air coverage. The BBC needs flagship sporting events like this in order to entice Joe/Jane Bloggs to part with his/her licence fee. Losing even part of the Olympics would be a travesty.

Getting live cricket back on terrestrial TV is paramount. The whole nation was gripped in 2005 with Channel 4's blanket coverage of the Ashes Test Series, and it's a crying shame that the live coverage rights have been sold to the highest bidder this time around when we are looking at a potential repeat of that epic series.
