When I first heard this change was in the offing, I grabbed a snapshot of the DNA "Who's Online" for future reference.

Just fyi, I finally got around to processing it, and I found that of the 1828 people logged on at around midday on that arbitrary day,

28 names would fail because they were too long, even though all the characters were allowed.

369 names would fail through disallowed characters, even though their length was 30 characters or fewer.

155 names would fail because they both used disallowed characters *and* were longer than 30 characters.

This totaled up to 552 active users out of 1828 (just over 30%) who were inconvenienced by the "upgrade". I'm only pointing this out because elseblog it was said that only a "miniscule" percentage of users would be negatively affected.

From a quick scan, the majority are falling foul of your omission of ", ', :, ;, (, ), ., !, ?, # and comma itself from the list of valid characters in a display name. Can you give us a sensible reason why you restricted these characters? "We didn't think of it" isn't a good reason, as anyone (even a humble user like myself) could have gone and actually looked at what characters were already in use...

I'm logged in to SSO as "Peet (the Pedantic Punctuation Policeman, Muse of Lateral Programming Ideas, Eggcup-and-Spoonwinner, Cheese Namer & Zaphodista)", and BBC iD as "Peet the Sadly Truncated". The page is greeting me as the former; I just want to see what name is attached to the posting.
Moderation: Let's talk it over (2) 5:03pm on 23 Sep 2009 On an aside (apologies, this really is off-topic) what's happened to The Hub? Has it been closed without telling anyone? I tried to post on the "Username moderation" page, but for the second time it refuses to accept the posting without giving any error message, and there's nothing on te page itself to say it's "closed". Thinking about it, I could post there before the most recent DNA update - have you (the BBC) broken something?

I would normally post this on the buglist thread in the Hub, but... :-/

1) Why has this post been awaiting moderation for a week now? http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/bbcinternet/2009/08/h2g2_an_update.html?dnafrom=43&dnato=43#dnaacs - it's a direct response to a subject raised by you, so it can't be "off topic", and there was no profanity or other objectionable material. What's the hold-up? Are you asserting the right to send posts into moderation limbo just because you don't agree with the content?

2) Why can we no longer post threads in the Moderation forum on "The Hub"? There's no message to say the page is "closed", but if you submit a post it just redraws the page and leaves you looking at the input form; the post never appears.

There's a big difference between just putting a comment on a thread and actually returning to acknowledge responses to that comment. I have noticed a tendency towards "Seagull consultation*" amongst BBC staff who show a preference for the Blogs.

(*Drop "wisdom" from a height and never return to it...)
