Downcast Benitez fears worst 1:45pm on 22 Apr 2009 This Liverpool 4 -Arshavin 4 stuff is plain nonsense. It's just as stupid to say that without Torres it would have been Arsenal 4- Liverpool 2.

I'm a neutral, I don't want to see ManU at the top either, but don't take away a wonderful comeback from Arsenal. They fought back against the run of play and capitalised perfectly on Liverpool's errors.
FSA say 'more capital, less risk' 1:41pm on 18 Mar 2009 Fast forward 15 years:

The economy is doing well across the Western hemisphere, people are accumulating wealth once more. Shareholders begin to question whether banks really need to sitting on so much capital and whether it couldn't be put to better use.

Some countries start to deregulate and banking profits increase as a result. Pension funds and other investment houses join the call for deregulation at home. Politicians warn about what happened last time. Bankers, shareholders, pension funds all say that that was 15 years ago and we've all learned our lesson.

The public demand to know why our banking sector is falling behind that of our competitors, many of whom are now deregulating "to meet the needs of a changing economy".

The opposition party declares that, when in power, they will announce a policy of financial deregulation to "free up the markets".

They get into power, deregulate and the economy surges. Houses prices rise as people gain access to mortgages. Consumer spending explodes...etc...etc...etc...

Of course it would never happen again. It couldn't happen again.

Could it?
We own Royal Bank 10:45am on 28 Nov 2008 Day in day out you blame the banks alone for this mess, but who was it who deregulated the banks and encourage them to trade in these riskier areas? The government.

Who failed to rein them in when things looked unsustainable for fear of threatening the tax revenue from both the banks and their wealthy employees? The government.

Who failed to tighten the regulations for fear of damaging the City's competitiveness and driving all this lucrative business abroad? Oh yes, the government.

It's simplistic to continue blaming the banks when they were doing precisely what the government and the regulatory bodies had encouraged them to do.

If you are going to be an impartial journalist then blame all three.
McCain's lost battle 10:07am on 05 Nov 2008 I went to bed last night content that even if John McCain came up with the surprise of the century, then the world would be a better place. Today, I thought his speech was really very moving and represented the generous, magnanimous America we have all missed for so long. But the day belongs to Obama, and rightly so. How inspiring to be an American today; never has the term United States of America been more appropriate.
Credit-crunched Gordon Brown 3:15pm on 22 Sep 2008 Nicely observed post. Of course what you are really saying is that Gordon has created rules and then broken them, said things and done the opposite, claimed as his successes things he did not do and accused others of the things he did do that didn't work out.

And this is the guy who claimed he was a conviction politician? I'm sure he would now call himself a pragmatic politician i for one think he's the most ridiculous character to have held that office in decades. Even John Major looked like the model of competence, a man in control compared to this lummox.
Class war or not? 5:17pm on 10 Sep 2008 I wouldn't deny that Labour probably are better placed to deliver fairness than the Tories. But fairness isn't high on peoples' wish list right now. A health service that's clean and dependable, an economy that's stable enough to give companies the confidence to invest, respect and appropriate reward for our armed forces, schools that aren't collapsing or mired in legislation and that can produce able young people...these all come above fairness on the list of things to fix. Labour should concentrate on the basics first. fairness will cost money, and we don't have any right now. Fairness is a headline grabbing, but ultimately pointless, gesture.
Cameron and corporate duds 1:28pm on 15 Jul 2008 To 12.21pm, why on earth would a court be qualified to judge whether a rescue plan was viable? They're not businessmen, they have no experience of business, this isn't an interpretation of the law they're being asked to look at. I'm struggling to think of anyone less qualified than a court.
