Old Firm departure would be ruinous 1:58pm on 21 Apr 2009 Totally agree Chick, well done.

The fact of the matter is; no matter how much everyone in Scotland outside of the Old Firm hates them, they are the lifeblood of our game. Look at the Irish leagues - they're terrible, that's what will happen to us if we allow this.

And anyway, why are Rangers and Celtic so certain they'll be major contenders down South? They've got a lot of fans, fair enough, but so do Newcastle, Sunderland, Leeds and Nottingham Forest, and they're hardly setting the world alight. Of course they have the potential to do well, but it will take a long time for any outsider to break the stranglehold of the big four, never mind two new kids with initially limited funds and a severe placement handicap (the Second Division). Factor in the lack of any European football for a number of seasons and further away trips you'll see fan numbers begin to dwindle. Why should they grow that quickly? If they were in the Premiership now they'd struggle to remain there, and we all know how difficult it is to go up and stick around in England.

I want to say good riddance to the bigotry and idiocy that these two clubs bring (can't see England wanting that), but unfortunately we need them both up here.
Football's last-chance saloon 2:16pm on 18 Feb 2009 Cracking article Fletch; I'm always interested in the workings of youth football. Mind you, the whole thing, while undoubtedly a good idea, seems to create a sort of surreal atmosphere. It must be a difficult situation to be in - after all, for us mortals we've never had a shot at playing football full-time, but for these guys the dream must feel like it's slipping away.
Ryan in wait 4:23pm on 16 Feb 2009 Sorry to get all "chip on the shoulder Scotsman" about this - but I reckon Craig Gordon would get a look-in on a GB team. Especially when you consider his international form (particularly compared to his fairly uninspiring stint at Sunderland so far).

Other than that though, fair enough.

If he doesn't work hard in training and shows a lack of committment, then why should he play over those that do? Maybe you can argue his goals ratio, but you certainly haven't viewed him in training as often as Burley has.

I don't get people that claim he HAS to play - he can't even get a game for Rangers. Why should Scotland be any different? I want people that play for the jersey, and Iwelumo's better anyway, he scores consistently at a far higher level.
UK Olympic team spells danger for Scotland 10:51pm on 30 Aug 2008 To say that no Scots, Welshmen or Northern Irish players would make to 2012 team is laughable. In an Under 23 tournament four years away, how can anyone predict who will be involved?

What about Gareth Bale? Still in his teens yet able - on his day - to tear a hole through most Premiership teams' right flank, or John Fleck, the young Glasgweigan that became the youngest player to ever appear in a British FA Cup Final at the end of last season. He damn near scored too. Now, obviously for every talented kid Wales, Scotland or N.Ireland can produce, England will probably have ten, but who's to say who will and won't make the grade?

If I were you, I'd take a look at my own national team and climb down off of my high horse. No wonder we never wanted to be involved, even before Blatter admitted he wasn't certain of our future safety.

Why risk it for a one-off amateur tournament that no one cares about?
China for gold, Britain for bronze? 04:19am on 22 Aug 2008 Even to be competing with the likes of Russia is bewildering. I've no idea how we could keep pace with - never mind shoot ahead of - a country so much bigger than ours. We've got to be the success story of these games, and London 2012 looks very promising now.

I just hope the real McHoy is still on the scene by then, though I confess that I've no idea of the "normal" age for a cyclist hanging up their...er...wheels is.

Wednesday's international football 8:31pm on 20 Aug 2008 Does Paul Fletcher know there's a Scotland game on? I mean, I'm not one to slag off journalists on here, but we've had about two comments so so far, one being "it's a scratchy affair at Hampden" - what the hell does that even mean?

Communists 2-0 Capitalists 03:17am on 16 Aug 2008 Shades of Iran beating the US at the World Cup back in the day - I forget the year. But, to be honest, it's a bit of a hollow victory in the end - how much can you celebrate beating a team full of players rejected by every possible baseball club?

I feel sorry for "Taipei" though, I would have loved to see them win - though the Chinese government would probably have had them jailed or something. So it's probably for the best.
