Momentous Monday 10:41am on 13 Oct 2008 Well the RBOS rights issue looks dead in the water already at 65p. The share price is well below that.

Once your reputation is gone, all else follows. There has already been one rights issue based on a dubious prospecutus and shareholders are telling RBOS where they can put their shares.

I'm not satisfied with the management changes. The whole board must go, including the non-execs.

Bopara plays on the walk, which usualy gets found out at top level.

And Key still has all the old technical faults he had when he last played for England - goodness knows why he is in so many people's sides.

Denly didn't stay in long enough to allow an impression to be formed.

England need more reliable batting and there was no sign in this match of where it is going to come from!
England future brighter with Harmison back 11:38pm on 11 Aug 2008 My feeling is that we are going to need to shake up the batting. Everyone apart from Pietersen is underperforming.

The openers have both gone backwards this summer. Bell, whatever he thinks he is, is not yet a number three and is developing maddeningly slowly for such a gifted player.

In the circumstances, we are probably left with no choice but the recall the best batsman amongst the keepers - Prior. It is a big risk though, because a keeper who can't be relied upon saps morale in a side.

Unless Trescothick can be persuaded to return, I think we have to take a punt on a young opener and also back either Shah or Bopara. Of the two, I believe Shah is presently more likely to score runs in Test cricket. Who the opener is, goodness knows. Carberry might be worth a try.
Pietersen revels in his coronation 04:09am on 05 Aug 2008 I find it amusing that Aggers and Stewie put the boot into KP and, within 72 hours, he is made England captain.

Don't think Aggers can be blamed for his criticism of Vaughan. I'm afraid his involvement and lack of runs in this series cost the side dear.

KP is a high risk choice for captain and there is a niggling feeling that he has been chosen to prevent him going freelance. If that is what has happened, then it is yet another demerit point for a set of selectors and coach who I think deserve more brickbats than the whole England team put together.

There is no doubt that Moores and Miller compare less favourably to Fletcher and Graveney.

After the selection of Pattinson, and the continuing uncertainty regarding the number of bowlers to be selected in the side, I can trust these selectors no more.

Hope I will be proved wrong, but I think Bopara is not yet a better batsman than Shah. Too many rushes of blood, still plays on the walk, lapses of concentration.

And what has happened to Harmison's tour brown trousers? Have they gone away? Or will they come out again as soon as he gets to India? In which case, what on earth is the point of picking him now with the series dead.

Finally, Ambrose, I think will play his last Test at the Oval. A shame this one, for we will be back in the land of the drop when Prior returns.

Pietersen fails to complete rescue operation 11:01pm on 01 Aug 2008 Good to see all the comments defending KP. He is our best player and will have learnt from what happened today.

The batting is a problem. Four bowlers is one too few, yet the batsman are too inconsistent to allow any other course.

I think we will have to bring Prior in for Ambrose. The latter's batting is not strong enough and we will have to trust to luck that Prior can hold on to a few more. However, it occurs to me that the selectors have gotten themselves into a mess that might never have happened at all had they stuck with Geraint Jones - a better keeper than Prior, and a better batsman than Ambrose.

Pattinson, of course, goes out. Sidebottom will probably come back in if fit, though personally I would take a gamble on Simon Jones. Harmison is a tempter, but he doesn't tour and I therefore think he must be forgotten.
South Africa hold whip hand 9:54pm on 19 Jul 2008 Whether commentators annoy people in the game is irrelevant - they should say what they think.

It is fairly clear to those of us who watched the game that Vaughan did not have full confidence in Pattinson. We are now asked to believe that he was a punt of James Whittaker.

However, putting the best construction on events, I am hoping that the selectors were just buying time, before bringing Simon Jones back in.

My expectation is that the side for Edgbaston will be Prior and Jones in for Ambrose and Pattinson.
Pattinson selection causes a stir 8:22pm on 18 Jul 2008 Graham Gooch is quite right.

What sticks in the craw is that this chap never came here to play for England. He has just been parachuted in by the selectors, who appear to have taken leave of their senses.

A one Test wonder, I hope.
Controversy reigns on opening day 7:20pm on 18 Jul 2008 Yes, I'm afraid Pattinson's selection was an error of judgement by Miller. He is clearly not a special talent, just a decent seamer.

It is a sad day.
