Will South Africa 2010 produce a new Pele? 2:20pm on 24 Nov 2009 Nice article. I had the great privilege of seeing him play and he was, without any shadow of a doubt, the best player to have ever played football. He had the lot and more. 2 feet, dribble, control, pass, shot and a great header of the ball. Don't even get me started on Maradona who didn't come anywhere near as a player or as a person.

The nearest I saw to Pele was Ronaldo in the season he played with Barsa. I'm a Madrid fan but I made sure I saw every game of Barsa that season just to see him play.
That's the sign of an all time great.

But, just a word about his opponent. It's no joke being a freak of nature and you've got to feel a bit sorry for him. I once knew a basketball player here in Madrid who was enormous and had all kinds of problems in his everyday life. Like not getting any clothes to fit him, not being able to sleep in a hotel bed, not being able to drive a normal car, not being able to go unseen in a crowd and so on and so on. Top that with having the face of a monster and the poor bloke doesn't seem to have a lot going for him. Money can only compensate you so much.

So, while I think it's great that David won - especially after reading an interview with him in The Guadian, great bloke - I can't help wondering about Goliath. Time to go back to your cave and count your money is what most people are thinking. Not me.

BTW a boring fight, right? Maybe it's time introduce a special limit for the Goliaths who weigh more than 150 k or measure more tha 6ft 7in.
Why Derby must keep faith with Clough 10:46am on 07 Nov 2009 If there's one lesson that's been learned over the past 20 years or so it's that if you want to get long term results you need to stick with your manager. Football managers are not static, they learn and develop. They get better and wiser, but they must be allowed breathing space and time. Swapping and changing is the road to ruin, just ask Newcastle fans.

The same conversation's going on at Liverpool. And with the same reply. Last year it was "Wenger must go!" and before that it was "SAF is too old and needs to retire".

Nigel Clough is clever enough and knows what he's doing. Give him time and don't undermine in front of the players.
Benitez faces biggest test 6:00pm on 21 Oct 2009 So, this was the genius manager whose team a few months ago slammed 4 in at OT, broke Chelsea's home unbroken record and gave Real Madrid a footballing lesson. Highest scorers in the Prem if I'm not mistaken.

But now he's a dope, right?

So, with a new manager - Keegan (seriously?), Dalgliesh (too old and too tired who did nothing at Newcastle) or MON (with Heskey up front?) things are going to turn round. Just like they did at Newcastle after Bobby Robson was fired, or at Leeds, or at Forest. With no money - 20 million a year for signings is a Championship budget - no new stadium with it's revenue, and you're in the dreaded downward spiral.

Last year it was "Wenger must go!"

3 years ago it was "Fergie must go!"

This year it's "Rafa must go!"

Fans have no patience.

What Liverpool need is a stable owner and a plan for the future which provides for a new 70,000 + stadium. Plus money for signings.

You can go forwards or backwards. But sacking your manager mid season is the first step on the slippery slope.
Maradona singing in the rain 10:40am on 12 Oct 2009 The big story in Spanish sports papers today is that Maradona and Messi don't get on and hardly talk to each other. The main reason seems to be Maradona's disappointment with Messi's form while Messi's supporters claim that the teams tactics are chaotic at best or non existent at worst.
It is a surprise, though, that a player considered by many to be the best in the world puts in such dire performances with his national side.

Could it be that Maradona really isn't very clever and that the whole situation is above his head? Another Kevin Keegan moment with the rejoinder that KK at least had the dignity to admit it? Too many years of being told that he walks on water by his accompanying sincophants have led him to believe he's a miracle worker, perhaps. Time to get somebody in who knows what he's doing.
Atletico facing the abyss... again 6:21pm on 22 Sep 2009 " Nobody at the club has yet come up with a coherent explanation of why there is nearly 40% less cash in the kitty, especially with some eagerly anticipated revenue from the Champions League."

Don't forget that the club is still owned by the notorious Gil family who used the club during the reign to "allegedly" launder money from their property operations in Marbella. That's why the club went into receivership some years ago.
It's always been a mystery ( well, not really) that such a big club made so little money. And now they're going to move the stadium which occupies a prime site and move it to near the airport as well as, of course, sell all their best players: Torres 2 seasons ago, and now Kun Aguero will be packed off, always depending on whether his form keeps up.

The sad thing is that they have fantastic fans who turn up through thick and thin in their thousands.
There's an old joke in Madrid about a little boy being taken to the game by his dad and asking: "Papi, por qué somos de Atleti?" In a city like Madrid, it takes a certain type of fan to choose not to see the big show at the Bernabeu.
The Battle of Freddie's Knee 09:32am on 07 Aug 2009 It's all very sad. No test cricket on open TV, no Richie Benaud, "back to back" tests squeezed in between 20/20 and ODIs with floodlights and garish pijamas. Lowering the bar at every opportunity is going to ruin cricket and, as Freddie rightly points out, the cricketers themselves.
In the old days (right, I can't believe I'm saying this, either) Freddie would have had plenty of time between tests to recover and would propbably not have ruined his knee in the first place. But he's a victim to cricket's now fevered attempt to squeeze every little financial drop out of the game.
Anyway, I hope to get a good stream on the net today - I can't get Sky where I live - and sit back and enjoy the day.

BTW Robbo, if it's any consolation I'm a caravanner myself, been all round Europe. It's called freedom, you sad whinging Clarkson fans, you don't know unless you've tried it.
Farewell Sir Bobby 8:21pm on 03 Aug 2009 Thanks, Robbo, I share your feelings. Funny, though, how the old managers were a class apart as far as human qualities are concerned. Cloughie, for all his bluster was another fine man. I know somebody who knew him well and said he had a heart of gold. So, too, did Matt Busby, Laurie McMenemy, Bob Paisley and the great Bill Shankley. They also shared a great sense of humour, just like Bobby Robson, and didn't take themselves too seriously.
How things have changed. It's almost too sad for words.
Big decisions need to be made 7:50pm on 30 Jul 2009 Here in Spain, all national team events, no matter what the sport, are broadcast free on open terrestrial TV. That includes all the national football games together with the Olympics and even when top sporting figures appear like Nadal at Wimbledon.

Obviously sport in Spain is seen as a right to watch whereas in the UK it's just another way of squeezing money out of the viewers who already have paid for their TV licence. Millions for the likes of Jonathan Ross, but nothing for the Test Matches which, from whatever way you look at it, are cultural events of historical significance, especially The Ashes.

Soon, voting will be privatised and the electorate will have to pay to cast their vote, as happens on shows like SCD and BGT.

What a mean, stingy country Britain is becoming.
Clough times at Derby 7:53pm on 29 Jul 2009 It's the old Cloughie magic that just won't go away. The fact that he's different from his dad gives it all a bit more sparkle. You can't but not admire Nigel's attitude and way of thinking about football. Of course, it makes sense, and of course it's the old simple things that are important. Let's hope he'll be successful cos a lot of what he says runs against the grain of modern football: the super signings, the star element, the quick fix - just look at Man City - the mega bucks always coming out on top.
