Your ideas and news 10:29am on 15 Dec 2009 Still plugging away to get the next decade sensibly named 'the tenz'. Obviously each year will be referred to as per usual eg ...2010, but the name for the decade really ought to be brisk, we have so much other, more important struff to deal with, such as global warming...so why am I wasting time on this, then? Enough said.
Make a suggestion 02:57am on 05 Dec 2009 After the 'noughties' the new decade is looming. I have decided it really ought be called the tenz...it just sounds right. None of this Australian nonsense, or the twee 'teenies!' No, this is the decade that is going to call us to account on global warming, so we need a few 'zzzzzzzz' in there, to add a little apocalyptic gloom, for the benefit of those somnolent zeddies who are oblivious to our presencee in this 'Age of Stupid.'
A cat, a bass, a trombone and a naked mannequin 10:45am on 26 Nov 2009 Also reminded of notorious 'trolley-holiday', camping trip when same intrepid threesome went camping in Brittany with tartan(rather than tesco)shopping trolleys. Carless family, tent,camping and cooking items,exasperatingly inverse ratio of comfort to convenience with lumpen camping equipment...we came back very fit, but my children resolutely declined to repeat the experiment.'Le camping sauvage'was accompanied with lots of French tut-tutting.
A cat, a bass, a trombone and a naked mannequin 10:36am on 26 Nov 2009 I once travelled with 18 bin-liners full of party food and two children. The latter consumed as much of the former as possible as we travelled cross-country, so easing our transit a little.
Also travelled with a bin-liner full of Americana via Virgin Airways.The air hostesses were a tad frosty, but how else could I transport random items?
Make a suggestion 11:32pm on 25 Nov 2009 A woman is subject to domestic violence every minute of the day. 85% of domestic violence results from men attacking women. A woman is killed every week of the year.
The government claims that it wants to stop domestic violence. But when I tried to raise the profile of domestic violence yesterday, by encouraging the government to support a national sculpture to show the state's abhorrence of this violence... what was Downing Street's response?

The petition reads:

We the undersigned petition the Prime Minister to: 'Create a
public work of art to highlight the right of women not to be
subject to domestic violence.'

Create a public work of art to highlight the right of women not
to be subject to domestic violence. Like Antony Gormley's work
the 'Angel of the North',which has fostered Northern pride,
this could be a reference point to highlight the plight of
women subject to hidden abuse.When women come accross the
statue they will be reminded that there is a way out of their
situation. Currently the average woman experiences 35 attacks
before she contacts the authorities,which reflects the fear,
confusion and shame felt by women experiencing violence at the
hands of a partner. A national group statue cast from women
survivors would highlight the issue, commemorate those over the
centuries who have died because of domestic violence, including
ritual killings, and act as a focus to remind women who
experience domestic violence that they have nothing to be
ashamed of, and that there is a way out. The violence itself is
the shameful act.

The government says one thing, and does another...

The party of the poor 12:37pm on 10 Nov 2009 I just read one comment, 'The Tories are our only hope.'This is the Conservative Party that squendered our oil wealth in one long party during the very time when our national infrastructure was in dire need of investment,reflected in the current need to rebuild energy resources, hospitals, schools, transport, long overdue during those years of Conservative rule.
The Conservative heritage is a huge divide between the very rich minority and the majority of the public which creates social unrest, crime and mutual distrust.More egalitarian societies are much happier and more successful than ours...like Holland or the Scandinavians.
Every time I pay a utility bill that is too high, or pay an inflated price for a rail ticket on our de-centralised and chaotic rail system, I think of the Conservative party's input into this.
If the Tory's are our our only hope, then we deserve another 18 years of Tory misrule!
What we need is electoral reform, so that we can develop a political culture which more accurately reflects the British public. 'First-past the post' voting fails to secure an outcome that reflects the majority's opinion.
At the moment tha party in power loses the election after a surge of public disgust in the marginal constituencies.
This is not a democratic or representative way to elect a government...particularly since 91% of our representatives are still male, along with a House of 'LORDS'. We need to secure an equitable, representative system for choosing the government.
Make a suggestion 6:20pm on 03 Nov 2009 When are disabled students going to be treated equally? HEIs are failing to institute the disability discrimination legislation, and the disability equality duty which entails disabled students participating in impact assessments of university policies. The Universities pay lip service to their obligation, but simply don't follow up their policy statements with action. Happy to take the funding involved in 'widening participation' policies set up by the government, at the very same time the idea of properly supporting disabled students to acheive their potential is not apparently very important to many universities, with regard even to basics such as physical access, let alone equal treatment.

No, the all important research exercise carries far more weight than even the most limited support for'non-traditional' students, who are seen as a pain, as being 'resource and time intensive'. This attitude is simply shameful.

I have contacted the NUS, the Times and Guardian Education Editors, all the Education ministers...their response is nil.Yet until the league tables highlight which universities genuinely support 'non traditional' students, and which universities persist in undermining disabled students by failing to implement the legislation, the current situation will persist, with disabled students failing to access higher education, and when they do get to university failing to progress, often as a result of discriminatory practices and the failure to integrate the support services available. Thus disabled people will remain poorer, and less able to challenge entrenched prejudices that remain not very far below the surface.
Disability discrimination is still far too prevalent in higher education.
The Glass Box. 5:58pm on 11 Nov 2008 On hearing David Cameron's fruity tones, so solemnly earnest and with such evidently high purpose, I was irresistably reminded of Martin Jarvis reading 'Just William' with the exact same lugubrious intonation! Triffic!
But not, perhaps, very statesman-like.
