Full deposit protection is nigh 6:18pm on 05 Oct 2008 Trust and confidence is the issue, and by all counts (the regulators) have said the Irish banks were well capitalized. As an open economy of 4 million people million they had every right to bring in legislation to stop a run on 1 or 2 of their six major banks. I think the Greek and German actions have shown their actions to be correct. Leaving those banks fail who have created a domino effect on the others. Those at the BBC (newsnight) who seemed to have taken a very negative view of Ireland and its 'anti-competitive' stance should think again! I have no doubt they will be applauding the 'decisive' actions taken by Brown if he follows through with similar legislation tonight!
About Mark Easton 8:05pm on 23 Jun 2008 Eh, Black Diamond, ..not sure how you came to the conclusion that Northern Irish(Ulster)men, typically having Scottish / English blood, can describe themselves most accurately as British ....... given that (1) its Northern Ireland (6 countries) where there is a very high probability there is Irish blood in almost all (no surprises there given it is on the Island of Ireland) and (2) probably the typical person would say they are Irish not British and (3) ..carry an Irish passport.
