What future for media and journalism? 4:15pm on 29 Aug 2009 I appreciate you weren't directly able to challenge Murdoch Jnr's points in your speech, Robert, but I think you allude to the key point. Murdoch is not opposed to a single organisation monopolising the news - providing it is a private company.

Case in point, FOX and News International monopolise the newsfeed to tens of millions of Americans, to such an extreme that they can control elections and politicians. Whatever Fox says is often believed by millions not out of a lack of intelligence, but because they don't access any other news source to tell them otherwise.

So where, in Britain, do we want the power to be? Would we rather it be in a not-for-profit organisation sworn to impartiality (even if it's not perfect) controlled by the us, as electors and licence-fee payers? Or should the power be with the unelected, unaccountable FOX with their own agenda and let nepotism (such as purely being the son of Rupert Murdoch) decide who has influence and a soapbox to billions of people?
News of the World bugged Sun editor 4:54pm on 10 Jul 2009 Excellent blog; shows exactly why we need the BBC. For although the private media may say we don't need a state-owner broadcaster and that they can police the politicians, who else is there to police the private media?

P.S. To various commentators - since when was talking about one of the largest news companies in the world not considered a business story?
Michael Jackson coverage 1:22pm on 08 Jul 2009 I'd just like to say that the BBC's coverage of the memorial service was fantastic! Five did not show the full ceremony so BBC Two was the only chance to watch the memorial service in full on non-Freeview TV, and BBC HD the only chance to watch the service in HD for non-Sky subscribers. It's no wonder it was one of the most watched BBC Two programmes of recent times, and 1bn people watched it worldwide (and just think how much of the world's population didn't have access to the service). It really does show that complaints are often generated by the minority who are the only ones propelled to take the time to complain - I hope that when you look back in a few decades time, the size of the occasion will finally hit you - sometimes history cannot be put into context until enough time has passed.

Changes to international pages 4:34pm on 14 Jun 2009 This is very disappointing for someone based in the UK and will make me far more likely to turn to international newspapers in future. I often like to switch to the 'International' version so I do not see the UK-biased view of the world that the BBC portrays on TV. Just because I am British does not mean I believe stories about Peter Andre and Katie Price should be seen on the front page over that of deaths abroad, for example! Your 'International' version was a way to not have struggle through spurious UK-biased news stories on the front page just to get to the BBC's real strength, international news reporting.

And, yes Steve I am perfectly capable of understanding "And, to repeat what I said in my original post, all the same content will be available as now so you'll still be able to get both UK and international news wherever you are". You do not need to be so condescending to your licence-fee payers as to repeat that sentence in italics. The sad fact is that your website is so disorganised that it is very difficult to access stories which are not on the front page. When you've sorted out a good hieracy and search functions, maybe you can claim that as an excuse. Very, very disappointing Steve; I hope the Trust investigates.
Starting gun fired on leadership contest 6:50pm on 03 Jun 2009 Ah the stupidity of Labour politicians continues to astound me. Hazel Blears not only made an idiot out of herself by conning the public out of even more money, but it seems like she is deluding herself that quitting will have any impact. No-one can save the Labour party, so by trying to force a leadership contest all she is doing is giving away even more votes for the party she professes allegiance for. Any Labour MP who thinks they can blame all their woes on Gordon Brown is forgetting how angry the public is with their whole party, the Blair years and all the MP's (Labour and otherwise) who have been caught with their hands in the till.

As much as I know it will hasten the entrance of Cameron et al (although I can hope for Cable, Clegg et al instead), the only way out of this mess is for Labour to admit they're defeated, realise that replacing Gordon Brown or in-fighting will do nothing, and give us a General Election!
Who owns the train times - or the news? 10:05am on 26 May 2009 Well done Rory on bringing this story to wider attention; I was infuriated when this happened. To be frank, a public company, subsidised by several private companies who take their money from the extortionate rail fees millions of Britons are forced to pay, is looking for another way to take money from the British public.

What you didn't mention is that NRE offers this information for free in the form of a website for mobile phones, and My Rail Lite was simply using this information, for no profit gain whatsoever - effectively doing the public duty that NRE long-since failed to do. However NRE have not only forced My Rail Lite to close and are charging for this information, but they are refusing to reformat their mobile web page for iPhone nor even promote this free mobile site to the public, so that thousands have to naively pay £5. Please help to stop them by complaining through the NRE website and on their comments page in iTunes!

Count it, don't follow it 3:09pm on 23 May 2009 After the Development analogy I do understand what you're saying Stephanie, and it's an excellent argument. Perhaps you're right, and we should be examining overall claims instead! Excellent blog, thank you.

I do however think that the detail of the claims remains fascinating, if only because it gives us an insight to the moral compass of some of these politicians and indicates what their perceive are reasonable claims. In other words, I find it amazing what some MP's felt was kind of items could be justified as vital for their day to day living - whatever the amount (or what they may have actually spent the money on)!
