Body of evidence 1:09pm on 07 Jul 2009 I agree with Nick (#18) in that the statistic saying only 2% of sports coverage was for women could be wildly skewed. A study based on 3 days in March 2007 does not have a big enough sample in my eyes. And how many papers did they study?

Women's sport gets the majority of its coverage when it is shown alongside men's sport. We have seen this in the last two weeks at Wimbledon and on a larger scale at the Olympics. The ICC have recognised this and schedulled the Womens T20 Cricket World Cup to run alongside the men's. The women's semi-finals were played at the ground before the men's. This greatly improved the stadium audience but was also promoted quite widely by Sky.

I think other women's sports should follow this model. Could the women's Champions League final be played the day before the men's? Or could it be played just before the men's but at a different ground? Or maybe copy the cricket model and play it at the same ground before the men's final?
True greatness beckons for boy racer 11:07pm on 03 Jun 2009 Cavendish is at the top of his game at the moment. He is specifically a sprinter, just like Alan Shearer was a specific goalscorer. If he can take the Green Jersey at the TDF then, in my eyes, he should definitely be a strong contender for SPOTY.

However, that award is voted for by the public. In terms of viewing audience, road cycling pales in comparison to sports such as football, rugby and cricket. Sportsmen competing in such minority sports only get true recognition in Olympic years, when they are given good coverage.

As such, I can't see a cyclist getting their hands on the SPOTY until David Brailsford's Sky Teams makes and impact on our television screens.

Chase hots up as Player bows out 12:00pm on 11 Apr 2009 Although he is 10 shots off the lead, this is a great exerience for Rory McIlroy. Golf does have pedantic rules but they are there for a good reason - well most of them are. I seem to remember someone (Faldo, I think?) moving a bit of coral from a bunker and getting penalised, although that would have been permitted if it was a piece of rock (and not the stuuf you buy from Brighton!). He's also been partnered with the reigining Masters champion. He could even be paired with Tiger tommorow.

He has got a long way to go, but Rory has enough time on his hands to beat Gary Player's record of Masters appearances. There is no doubt in my mind that Gary stayed on to beat Arnold Palmer's record, but there is no shame in that. The fans at the course were extremely appreciative to see him play. Although I'm too young to have witnessed Gary's best years, I have sensed his great attitude and professionalism in the twilight of his career.
The biggest events, for the largest number of people 1:11pm on 10 Mar 2009 Poster #16 - I don't know this for certain but I always thought that Sky kept the highlights for winter tours because not many people are able to watch these due to the times at which they are broadcast live.

With the summer tests it is slightly different as more people would be able to catch the end of the day's play and get a recap of the day at the end of the programme.

RBS reduces sporting sponsorship 4:01pm on 26 Feb 2009 Apologies Stinpake, I didn't read the penultimate paragraph correctly. It states that non-contractual costs in F1 have been reduced by 50% - I'm not sure how mich this amounts to? I would hazard a guess and say that is not too much.

I still think is a major blow for a privateer team like Williams. Nascar teams are feeling the pinch with one team only being cobbled together a couple of weeks before the start of the season.

Stinpake, you say that the alternative could have been a lot worse but there is no alternative. They are contractually bound to pay this sponsorship. The only way it could be worse is if they went bust (like West Ham's sponsor XL) and we all know that the Government won't let that happen.
RBS reduces sporting sponsorship 12:33pm on 26 Feb 2009 I think this is one of Mr. Bose's better blogs and people are comlaining for the sake of it. It seems to have become a sport in its own right!

I can't see how RBS pulling the plug on their sponsorship will help Williams, as posters #3 and #8 have stated. The current sponsorship money has been cut by half. This will have an immediate impact on the running of the team.

A new sponsor will have to be found by the end of 2010. Are there going to be many companies in a position to offer sponsorhsip money then? I doubt Williams will be able to find a company willing to back them with the same level of money that RBS did.
Come in number one 11:52am on 13 Feb 2009 I doubt Almunia will ever be called up to the England squad. Nacho Novo has qualified to play for Scotland, but even they haven't exercised this loophole.

With regards to Robinson, he started off the season really well, but as post #7 says, his form seems to have tailed off. I don't believe his career is over, but I think other keepers will be given a chance ahead of him if James is dropped before 2010.

Steve, your point regarding the agility of Shilton and Seaman at the end of thier career is valid but has to be weighed up against what other attributes they bring. Who is to say that if a younger, more inexperienced keeper was in goal instead at these tournaments that we might have been knocked out in the group stages due to a silly error?

I also don't think that you can say that David James lacks agility. Although, to be fair, we have still got 18 months to go (if we qualify) and James ability could drop off. Let's hope not.

Your reports really got me into the sailing. I have never seen a commentator so enthusiastic about the event they were watching!

I think this was summed up at the end of the Star race when you were chasing after Iain and Bart and nearly fell in a couple of times, but I doubt even falling overboard would've dampened your spirits.
Why 250km cycle route will favour Valverde 10:11am on 08 Aug 2008 After a great team performance by CSC in le Tour it is going to be good to see them riding as rivals.
