Guest: Les Dennis 7:23pm on 14 Jul 2009 I had three 3 network mobile phone which lost signal over the last 10 months when the 3 network switched from 02 to Orange as the roaming partner - after numerous calls and contsantly haggling with them I got all three contracts cancelled- it took a lot of time and many calls but I was adamant that I should not have to continue with the contracts and eventually they gave in
Snow and the Weather Centre 3:36pm on 05 Feb 2009 1963 - the last really bad winter as far I am concerned - the village school was closed for an extra 5 weeks after the 2 week Christmas holiday. I only lived about 50 yards from the school and the headmistress actually lived in the school house. She taught the 11 plus children in her house and the rest of us had the most wonderful 5 weeks. The snow was more than plentiful, the village was often cut off and it did not do us any harm.
It would be quite stupid for this country to invest in vast numbers of snow ploughs, winter tyres etc - they would just be mothballed for years - now that would be a serious waste of money. By next week there will be another news story.
Schools were closed for safety reasons - do you really want your children travelling in such conditions. I am married to a teacher - there was very little snow - the school stayed open and he did get there. But the snow in our village was far heavier and the village roads remained ungitted- he therefore put his life at risk to get to school - how ridiculous. Why put lives at risk so that children dont miss a few hours school. What we need is a more understanding attitude by employers that for a very short space of time - employees might not get in not because of weather but because of emergency child care.
Furthermore stop comparing us to countries that have months of snow every year - of course they can prepare for it- we will never be able to match them.
The secrets of Jamaica's sprint success 7:27pm on 23 Aug 2008 On TV today Steve Cram said we just dont have the depth of talent to do well overall in athletics. From personal experience we are not looking hard enough for it. Living in the south west is a particularly stupid thing to do if you are a budding althlete. 10 years ago my son was the county 100m champion for his age group- he didnt have a proper coach, the only nearby althletics club was a road runners club with little interest in sprinting and he trained on a concrete path. He was picked to go to the nationals in Bitmingham - and Ok he didnt do that well but it was the first time he had ever used blocks and he had never trained on a proper track. he did go on to represent the county - that was complete shambles - very poorly run - the relay team was picked just before the race with no training on passing the baton. Althletics at school has long been the poor relation- just an annual sports day where novelty races are given more support.
If we want to better In London 2012 the powers that be in athletics need to get across the whole country and raise the porfile at school level and get some of these usless dinosaurs away from local clubs. Both my sons were good althetes but gave up because of lack of local and school support - they took up football and rugby instead. One of them was also a keen tenni splayer but gave up because of the circus that is local tennis and no interest or support from the school.
Nananananananananana BATMAN. 6:53pm on 04 Aug 2008 I saw Batman last week - its a very dark, violent film. I was horrified to see so many very young children there - at least half a dozen children who were no more than 5 or 6. It was totally unsuitable for them. I feel that parents have relied on the 12a certificate as a guide and it was completely irresponsible to give it such a rating.
