Updated editorial guidelines 12:32pm on 12 Oct 2009 Here's an example of a journalist letting his personal opinion shape his 'analysis'. When describing the reaction to Obama winning the Nobel Peace Prize recently, Mark Mardell (North Americal Ed.) said on his blog:

"I expect a day of sneering reaction from the conservative media here."

My understanding of this comment is that Mark's view is that anyone who views Obama's award as somewhat either premature, or that the panel picked the wrong candidate from the shortlist to win, are 'sneering', rather than that this view is a legitimate view to hold? Effectively discreding those who hold a different view to Mark's?

Some felt Zimbabwe Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai was a credible candidate on the Nobel shortlist, but it would appear those who hold this view are 'sneering' according to Mardell.

Can we have less 'analysis' and more factual news please. Give us all sides and we'll make our own minds up thanks very much.

Auntie's dilemma 5:32pm on 30 Oct 2008 A number of BBC journalists have pushed the line "we must give the youth what they want". I don't get it. I'm sure if you broadcast public executions they would get a healthy audience, but that's no reason to do it - is it? Do teachers let kids muck about and abuse each other without sanction because the kids won't like it if they aren't allowed to run riot? Of course they don't - education is a public service, there for the 'public good'.

Public Service Broadcasting. That's what the BBC should be about. Why should the BBC receive a mandatory licence fee to then insist on attracting the 'youth' by emulating MTV? (ironically MTV have already sacked some years ago when he turned up for work the day after 9/11, dressed up as Ossama Bin Laden).

The licence fee is too expensive and the BBC is now too big. I'd rather pay say £100 a year for a slimmed down BBC doing much less, better.

One way to avoid such 'commercial pressures' on BBC America would be for the US Government to impose a tax on the ownership of a television that all US Citizen households would have to pay (say 400 USD annually) the total collected to be passed to the BBC to pay for BBC America television, an internet site, radio etc. This way the 'style and substance' of BBC America would be protected.

Wide-ranging news stories 2:33pm on 22 Aug 2008 10. - Interesting points. I'm not arguing for no provision though - I'm arguing for provision in an inclusive way rather than in a 'separate' or divisive way. Channels should reflect interest irrespective of race/ethnicity. BBC 'Asian' Network, by definition singles out a single race/ethnic group (albeit a wide one at that). I just think that's divisive. I'm not suggesting that the output is stopped at all, just rather that it's available via channels that don't state they are just for one race or ethnicity. For example can't issues of religion, islam etc be included in polictical programmes across the BBC Network aimed at everyone, ie in an inclusive manner?
Wide-ranging news stories 12:50pm on 22 Aug 2008 I agree with previous posters in that it is simply racist for the BBC to have a channel purely for people of a certain race.

Why can't the themes and issues that can affect those of 'Asian' heritage be included in the main BBC channels along with all the other races? Can't we all be involved in the dialogue? I'm interested in all topics/ issues, wherever they come from - it enriches my understanding of mankind, and my fellow neighbours and human beings.

But BBC Asian Network is a hinderance to cohesion within UK communities, and can only serve to amplify difference.
