Instead of the 8 third-placed teams dropping into the Europe Lite league, you choose a team at complete random from the top 4 divisions in the country that each third-placed team comes from and they get to compete.

Come on, who wouldn't want to see Accrington Stanley playing Ajax, Hamburg or Sheriff Tiraspol (who they might genuinely have a chance at taking some points off of...)?

Cardiff & Forest - genuine promotion candidates? 4:52pm on 02 Nov 2009 Obviously I'd love to see Forest up and challenging a at the end of the season, but I'm pretty sure that with the way the team is at the moment, we'd come straight back down.

I think Billy's right. After consolidating our promotion by staying up last year, we need to secure a place between 7th and 14th this year and then have a real tilt at promotion next year. I think a bit of streamlining and then strengthing our squad could work wonders for us after a 10 years in the doldrums.

Playoffs/autos next year maybe?

The problem with winner takes all 6:04pm on 18 Mar 2009 A premiership team draws all 36 games and thus ends on 36 points. Another team wins 5 matches and loses the rest, ending on 15 points. Why should the more consistently good team fair worse than the team that may have got lucky on a few occasions?

Similarly, if (say) Massa is 2 wins in front of Hamilton before the penultimate grand prix, what's to stop him causing Hamilton to fall off the track in the knowledge that even if he loses points or is demoted, it won't make any difference?

It could also be the case that somehow Hamilton is 5 wins behind with 4 races left but is only 14 points behind or so....still a chance of winning in the points system, but no chance in the new scenario. Why watch that? Where's the excitement? The drama? There is none.

It may well be boring anyway though. Last season, Ferrari were good in hot dry conditions but were absolutely useless in wet conditions. Ergo, as most races take place in spring/summer (northern hemisphere) and mostly in that said hemisphere, Ferrari would have had a huge advantage in this new scenario.

This news has made me really irritated.

The Joe Kinnear names-messing-up bit was genius, but doesn't it just show how completely anonymous that newcastle have been this year that I had to visit their section on the website to work out which players you actually meant? Realised that I didn't know the names of many of their players at all....

Good reasons to stay up late 10:23pm on 28 Jan 2009 Roger,

First of all, I think it's great that the BBC has retained the premiership highlights rights. After the unforgiveable act of surrendering the FA cup rights to ITV, it would have been terrible if the premiership had gone that way as well.

Secondly, what are the chances of getting the guys to stop calling Mark Lawrenson "Lawro"? Just makes him sound ridiculous.

Thirdly, I know that John Motson is a British institution, but I think we all can agree that he's had his day...give the main matches to Simon Brotherton and the like.

Fourthly, why do we see 5-10 minute highlights of each match nowadays? There's no way to get a real feel for how the game was going. How about reverting to how it was 10 years ago, showing extended highlights of 3 games and just having the goals from the rest?

Finally (forgive the length, but to be honest I wasn't aware that you existed until I read this blog), may I suggest you rename Football Focus "Premiership Focus"? That's all that seems to be talked about 95% of the time unless it's FA cup weekend. There are 72 football league clubs you know. Maybe a couple of features on them wouldn't go amiss?

Oh, (look at that, I found something else to be grumpy about? :D) maybe the pundits could all do a referee's course and ref a few sunday league matches? Maybe then they'd realise just how hard a job it is (don't expect everyone else to agree with that one...)

adrianforest, I think Scotinswede's point was that GB weren't Ashes winners or Rugby World Cup winners.....England were. Whereas GB are the ones that compete in the Olympics.

On another note, does anybody else hate the hideously americanised term "Team GB"?
