Why blogs matter to the BBC 09:44am on 31 Dec 2008 Stephen Glover picks up on an issue that I mentioned a while ago on a BBC blog somewhere.

There's no such thing as "objective news" reporting only the facts - News is always reported from one angle or another and most of us are generally happy with that. For example, the Beeb report overseas affairs with the assumption that the democratic system is better than any other - that's not objective (and it's certainly not a provable fact) but it's an assumption that most of us are happy to go along with.

The question is therefore whether the angle the BBC take in reporting / blogging is intentionally (or otherwise) supportive of a particular political stance which not all of its audience is happy to sign up to.

Lately for me the answer to that question is yes - the Beeb and its editors do seem beholden to left of centre politics.
No shame to European defeat 10:36am on 22 Sep 2008 As others have said, Faldo - great player but a predictably poor RC captain. He is and always has been a loner and his lack of team / motivational drive clearly contributed to the loss. As someone above said you can't congratulate Azinger and not put at least some of the blame on Faldo.

For me the RC has been far too much about Faldo and I don't think he has done anything to diminish that - he still wants to be at the centre of stuff and that's no good for a team campaign.

One other thing. Why do I keep reading that Faldo isn't sure whether he wants the captaincy next time around. Surely it's not him who decides. And why after having a whole raft of winning captains over recent years would we want a losing captain at the helm next time?

thanks for the reply and apologies - I'd read the news story but hadn't noted it was authored by yourself.

While I generally agree with your comment that there won't be that many people who buy a 360 specifically for FFXIII (especially because as it turns out it will still be PS3 exclusive in Japan) the thought that SquareEnix would even consider putting FF on an MS product says a lot about MS current market share etc.

Again I agree that MS strategy for the future appears to being pulled in two directions.

Whilst on the face of it this E3 looks likes MS saying - "look we can do casual gaming" (not too convinced they look comfortable doing this but that's the message anyway), surely the underlying strategy is that MS are seeking to expand their market share by playing to one of the few differentiating strengths they do undoubtedly have - their online gaming and community environment. Isn't that the real story of MS at E3 08.

No mention of FFXIII or Netflix (currently not UK bound), or Primetime (incoming to UK). Nothing at all on being able to copy games to HD.

These are the things being discussed on gaming forums and making headlines on gaming web sites by people who at least seem to have a little bit of an idea of the state of the gaming industry.

and as has been said - what's wrong with cherry picking, making stuff better and placing them on the largest networked gaming environment around?

Thanks for replying Nick, but I'm sorry blogs like "Five tasks for Microsoft post-Bill" - (DW 30-06-8) aren't merely written in a "personal tone", they are full of "personal opinion".

Unless that is, Darren and others, are speaking on behalf of the BBC in their blogs and therefore giving the corporation's "opinion", line, stance, call it what you like, on the future of Microsoft - then clearly it's not merely his "personal" opinion.

Stating Microsoft need to be more open to open source, and that they should move on from Vista because it's been a failure isn't merely tone - it's comment.

My personal opinion is that Microsoft can relate to open source in whatever they wish and that within a free market they shouldn't be hampered at all by state regulation. But the point is - that is "my personal" opinion.

As a general rule, surely whenever anyone says anything via any medium, it's not merely tone that is being conveyed, hopefully there's some content in there as well.

To say that "the BBC should not have a "line" pro or anti anything" is surely naive if you're going to write editorials about anything at all. The whole point of editorial comment, whether on a blog or elsewhere is to not merely to report the news but to pass comment on it.

Before I go, again please don't think my main concern is that the Beeb are anti-Microsoft, or that I've particularly got something against Darren Walters or Simon Thompson. My concern is that I'm not sure the informal and personal medium of blogs is the best way for staff of a corporation to convey comment, unless you are happy for them to be official spokes-people for that corporation.

I totally agree with you that blogs are excellent at giving an opinion in a personal, informal tone and that's great - the question is who's opinion are these "personal" blogs giving.
