Scots duo pay dearly for mistakes 9:29pm on 03 Apr 2009 Been a critic of your article in the past but this is a good article. Rightly so people have been criticising the players, Ferguson is a perennial underachiever for Scotland and McGregor is more interested in other things off the park. Funny how Ferguson thought he was the King of Scottish Football and Rangers Football Club but has been brought right down to earth. The V-signs was something kids do in primary 3 when they think they can get away with swearing, not grown men supposedly meant to be role models.

However you rightly raise the point that the SFA have been a shambles over the incident. As an Aberdeen fan, i don't have much love for Rangers or Walter Smith but they have handled the situation admirably.

Can anyone tell me who George Peat is? I know he is the Chairman of the SFA but how has he managed to reach this position? He seems highly inept to me and his comments about the SPL (although true) did nobody any favours. He should just stay out of things and let Gordon Smith get on with the job.

Last season at Aberdeen we had Sone Aluko (Birmingham City) and Josh Walker (Middlesbrough) who were brilliant for us. Both were just 19 and due to their young age they had the odd bad game and made mistakes such as Aluko not tracking back whilst playing left wing. But due to their undoubted ability they helped us win some games, in particular both scoring in our magnificent 2-2 home draw with Bayern Munich.

Now Sone Aluko has resigned for the Dons permanently and won SPL Young player of the month in November and Josh Walker started Middlesbrough's game against Sunderland recently although sadly he picked up an injury.

Anthony Stokes of Sunderland is another loan success story. He was an unheard of Arsenal youth player, but went on loan to Falkirk a few years ago and scored a silly amount of goals for them. 3 months after joining Falkirk he joined Roy Keane's revolution at Sunderland.

Why not discuss the current situation at Rangers like some of the other posters above have mentioned?
Should there be a winter break? 1:26pm on 08 Jan 2009 With the lowe English Football Leagues having 46 games a season, I'm not sure how feasible a winter break would be.

As an Aberdeen fan, I hated the winter breaks we had a few years back. Mainly just because they were boring for the fans, I had nothing else to do on a Saturday!

However you will know by my recent comments I'm a cynic of yours. I just feel this article is trying to big up how much you love St.Mirren but I'm sorry, the rumours (or are they?) of you being a Rangers fan will always hang around you.

Also it's a bit of a biased article too. I've just felt recently that a lot of your articles aren't particularly relevant of main interest to SPL fans. For example the likes of Phil McNulty (BBC Premiership blogger) and Paul Fletcher (BBC English Football Leagues) write about teams that are on good form, challengers to the throne, managerial success stories, clubs in crisis (That doesn't translate to rangers losing two games in a row) amongst other things. I'll give you a few topics that you could discuss:

1. The recent good form of Dundee United and the part Craig Levein has played in that and whether they can sustain it.

2. Aberdeen fans love/hate relationship with Jimmy Calderwood

3. Talk about the troubles that are facing Inverness Caley Thistle.

4. The fall of Motherwell and Falkirk this year.
An Atlantic League would sink SPL 9:22pm on 29 Dec 2008 I'd rather Celtic and Rangers were in the SPL properly or not at all. None of this Reserve team rubbish. That would be depriving two football clubs a place in the SPL and also two football clubs a place in the Scottish Football Leagues.

The problem is gloryhunting fans and Old-Firm obsessed media. This article appears to sit on the fence until the very end where you appear to be against the Old Firm leaving. Despite the points difference, I would say the likes of Dundee United, Aberdeen, Hibs and Hearts are the closest they have been to the Old Firm in years. If any of those sides can hang on to their best players for a few seasons in a row or get a decent cash injection, they could seriously threaten the Old Firm and make the SPL a more exciting league, therefore generating more revenue through media income, ticket sales, corporate hospitality, merchandise etc.

But does the West Coast Media and Mr. Chic Young want an East Coast side threatening the Old Firm Duopoly? Does the SPL and the SFA want it with the way they bend over backwards for the demands of the Old Firm?
The perils of turning 30 8:36pm on 28 Dec 2008 Craig Brewster played until he was 41 for Aberdeen and was playing well and Dean Windass is still an absolute legend.

Gavin, do you think you will hit your best form in your thirties or do you reckon you've hit your peak? Going by you saying you don't have much pace, I think you could develop into a better midfielder due to your experience. Craig Brewster & Dean Windass weren't blessed with pace either and they played on late into their careers. All the best anyway.

As a paying spectator I assume that you are working as hard as humanly possible every single second of the match. It's just a "basic" pre-requisite, absolute minimum requirement."

Dortmund Owl, you're telling me everyday at work you give 100%? Every football match you attend, you give 100% support?

I can understand that some games players get complacent and take their eye off the ball Gavin. It's human nature but Dortmund Owl seems like a robot

An example about player motivation is:

Aberdeen FC last season were struggling to beat the likes of St.Mirren and Caley Thistle (no disrespect to these sides) however were beating FC Copenhagen 4-0 and leading Bayern Munich twice before drawing 2-2. Players motivate themselves more for certain games and the fans are the same. The atmosphere was rocking for those two European games but dead against St.Mirren and Caley Thistle. I understand there on brilliant wages and should be professional but they are humans after all.

But I must say I was highly impressed with Billie-Jo Saunders at the Olympics. His first fight was an absolute beauty to watch, hand speed, footwork and even power was amazing for someone of 18 years of age. His 2nd fight he was beaten by a cute Cuban and his inexperience and youthful exuberance was exposed. But hardly a disgrace in that. Very excited to see him in action.

Point 12. Missionary Dave:

Aberdeen reaching the last 32 of the UEFA was a brilliant achievement and so was Hearts just reaching the group stages of the UEFA Cup a couple of seasons ago. Check your facts 1st please.

Point 22. Consistent Inconsistency. Seriously what do you expect from a small nation? All small countries have peaks and troughs. Croatia after their fantastic World Cup 1998 failed to qualify for Euro 2000 and were poor at WC2002 and 2006 and Euro 2004 until a brilliant team in 2008.

Speaking as a 22 year old, I first started watching football in the mid 90s and most Scottish teams were performing poorly. Since then we've had commendable & unlucky performances from Advocaat's Rangers and O'Neill's Celtic in the Champions League, Celtic reaching the UEFA Cup Final in 2003, Rangers reaching the last 16 of the champions under McLeish in 2006, Celtic twice in a row reaching the last 16 of the champions league and for me (ok, i'm a bit biased, I'm a dons fan) Aberdeen reaching the last 32 of the UEFA Cup was a fantastic achievement, which I feel should provide inspiration to the likes of Hibs, Hearts, United etc that they can achieve in Europe.

In other words, the older generation were spoilt by the strength of Scottish football and things have changed in European Football with the TV money rocketing up in certain leagues, Premiership being the main 1, the improvement in facilities and experience in ex-Yugoslavian and USSR countries and various clubs funded by major benefactors (Shakhtar, Zenit St.Petersburg, CFR Cluj).
