Adopted Mason highlights question of allegiance 11:24pm on 24 Jun 2009 I accept fully anyone with a British parent (and by British I mean English, Scottish or Welsh) - so Hargreaves, Rusedski, Pieterson and others are 100% entitled to represent GB or one of its consituents as a blood right. If a parent is British, the child is British. To say or think otherwise is to suggest that one of their parents is of less importance than the other. Ridiculous.

I don't agree whatsoever with people just switching allegience through residency. Your instinctive love of a country comes through your parents, your family - that's who instill the deep and permanent affection and understanding of a nation, its culture, history and people.

A foreigner is never going to truly care about representing GB just by living in London or wherever for the requisite number of years. I could never embrace a foreigner with no British parents switching to my flag for their personal convenience.

We already nicked Ed Joyce for the windies World Cup then never played him. It's a disgrace.

Ireland were probably better than England in that last world cup, certainly in the field and that was without their potentially best player who we cup-tied, presumably for the sole intention to make him unavailable to Ireland. It's plain wrong at the next big tournament to underhandedly snag their other best batsman.
Immigration: a strain or a help? 8:06pm on 18 Mar 2009 Only the BBC could still be asking these kinds of questions in an earnest fashion -
- the "conversation" about mass immigration has been and gone mate, an overwhelming majority of the population have been beaten into submission on the subject by our BBC/Guardian media-political elites -
- that the overwhelming majority think the horse has bolted and the stable door is still swinging in the wind seems neither here nor there, we all know nothing is going to change-
- there have been polls for years now showing that immigration is people's number 1 concern, that people want limits, points systems, stronger borders, and generally showing impotent rage at the whole immigration shambles (Labour's true legacy) yet still "Auntie" is posing questions about whether importing foreign populations is a good or bad thing, trying to have some "conversation" purely for show -
- We all know what the BBC thinks, you'll be happy when Britons with British parents are a minority (and edging towards extinction). And as that's something our monopoly State Broadcasting Leviathan wants, it's a "vibrant" and "diverse" future we're going to have to pretend to enjoy.

Hugely respected, much admired... but loved? 1:38pm on 13 Jan 2009 I'm English and I loved the way he plays.

Give me a thumper like Hayden over some effeminate nurdler every time.

I'm not surprised they don't like him - the English "traditionalists" or "purists" or whatever English cricket watchers who never play the game but think it's at its best when 2 men and a dog watch a county game ebb to a slow draw want to call themselves.

The fact we don't rate Hayden (except grudgingly on stats alone) is the very reason why we never put together 3 decent 50-over performances, why we'll take 50 years to win a Twenty20 tournament (and never admit its the dominant format even when the evidence will be overwhelming) and it's the reason why (leaving the 2005 Ashes off the table) our approach to Test cricket is stodgy and falling behind the times.

If only we did rate Hayden higher I'd hold out more hope for English cricket's future.

It's Tests and Twenty20 now - the 50-over stuff has been exposed as containing 30 mundane overs in the middle, especially the way England things.

I know some of the creaking establishment (CMJ et al) suddenly like ODI's after tagging them as nothing more than 'pajama-cricket' for years, purely as a defence mechanism against the young upstart of Twenty20, a format they hate even more - but the fact is that all the never-ending ODI games we play are meaningless - especially as we're the only cricketing nation that couldn't give two hoots about the Cricket World Cup.
