Ashes are still the ultimate, says Warne 11:59am on 24 Jun 2009 IMHO, Foster has to be picked ahead of Prior. We need to send out a message to our middle order that we trust in them, picking Prior will just make them nervous. We have three bowlers who are all excellent batsmen: Flintoff, Broad and Swann, and we should use this.

The team should be:

Strauss
Bopara
KP
Bell
Flintoff
Broad
Swann
Foster
Sidebottom
Anderson

I owuld be pretty happy that everyone down to 9 can bat. Then, you can just tell Sidey and Jimmy to throw the bat around like it's a T20.

The other option is to switch Sidey with Rashid. The problem here is that Sidey is a top quality bowler and it would be unfair on him, Anderson or Broad to lose out. Would prefer Broads variation, Andersons placement and Flintoffs agression if we had two spinners, though...

IMO, we have some good options in every position - there are at least two players fighting for every place. Would have liked to see Matt Stevens, but he only has himself to blame...

The front row is practically nailed on - Jenkins, Flannery, Murray.

I would not pick wither Ford or Rees at hooker as they are both wobbly throwers - we need to limit SAs chance to nick lineout balls - they may nick a couple, but I would be worried that with Ford or, especially, Rees throwing, they could utterly dominate and it would be game over...

2nd row looked nailed on, but AWJ hasn't been in good form. In fact, none of the Hairsprays Welsh contingent have been - could this limit their selection? There should be more players from Cardiff than Ospreys.

There also looks to be 6 contenders for the back row - the Irish 3, Williams, Croft and Easter. Bryn talks of the leadership of Jones being neccessary, well Easter can provide that, and is on better form.

I wouldn't let Phillips near the team, and it would be interesting to see Hook at 10 and Paterson 15 midweek...

Anyway, heres looking forward to a good squad announcemnet, just please no Haskell
Wigan's Zaki mystery 2:55pm on 09 Apr 2009 The talk when he started banging in the goals for Wigan was why he hadn't made a career for himself outside of Egypt despite obviously having the talent. Remember, he didn't play a single game for Lokomotiv Moscow before returning to Egypt. I think that we now know why he hasn't been able to forge a top class career for himself. Any player who does not have the mentality for top class football will eventually be found out, and this is even more prevelant in the English Premiership.

I would, howevere be interested to see him move abroad again, perhaps when he is in his late 20's. If a club were to keep faith in him and provide the support he craves for a couple of years, I can see him forging a late career in a top European league. Not the Premiership, though...

Six Nations Team of the Tournament 12:39pm on 23 Mar 2009 Er, JLousy, are you forgetting Danny Care? Probably the second best lions elligable SH behind Dwayne Peel! And 10 isn't a problem, Jones and O'Gara are 1 and 2, with Hook, Cipriani, a fit Wilkinson, Flood and possibly Godman scrapping for the last place.

It isn't petty nationalism in saying there were too many Welshmen in that team. The truth is that they did not perform this 6N. Only in the Scottish game did they truly perform. And the weak link there has to be Mike Phillips. Not a no9. If Peel hadn't got injured, I reckon he would have played against Ireland, and then maybe it would have been a different outcome.

And, for the record, there was only really one stand out Englishman this year, and a Kiwi at that!
Six Nations Team of the Tournament 09:56am on 23 Mar 2009 Pretty much agree with this. I think that Parra deserves a mention - he as excellent for France excpet his kicking...

Also, Jerry Flannery and Euan Murray deserve a mention in the front row.

My team has 6 changes - Kearney, Medard, Parra, Williams, Murray and Flannery for Byrne, Bowe, Phillips, Wallace, Hayes and Szarzewski.
Home comforts for England stars 6:45pm on 18 Mar 2009 "The Wasps flanker is young and good looking" Eh? "he is one of England's finest young rugby players." Eh?

Why are the press going on that Haskell was dropped because of his signing for Stade? The simple fact is that he does not contribute to Englands game - only to the penalty count - and that was wwhy he was dropped. Haskell is arrogant and plays only for himself, and until he realises that he is NOT one of the best back rowers in the Northern Hemisphere - never mind the best in the world - he should be nowhere near an England shirt.

As for players moving to France, I think you can see that those making the move are players whom at the time of moving were not in the reckoning for an England slot. Except Haskell and Flutey. Flutey is 29 and is only seen as a short term measure in the England setup. This "exodus" never even started. It was only players leaving Wasps because the team wasn't being successful, and the other GP teams not wanting them - probably with the exception of Flutey.
The problem with winner takes all 2:25pm on 18 Mar 2009 Well, I think we can say that this greatly increases Massas chances of winning the title. Everyone saw that he was the most inconsistent driver last season - he won more races than anyone else, but he didn't have the consistency to finish on the podium often enough to win the championship outright.

It also has the problem of completely removing the underdog from the reckoning. Someone like Vettel or Kibica will probably win a couple of races, but will have no chance to win the title by finishing consistently well without blowing the field away. It is ludicrous.
England's new dawn 11:10am on 16 Mar 2009 I have been able to find them, but does anyone know the penalty count before and after the 60th minute?

I can remember about 4 or 5 before hand, and then it seemed like a flood in the last twenty! I can't believe that the papers are saying that Haskells dropping is to do with his moving to France. The simple fact is that he and Vickery give away the bulk of Englands penalties, and Vickery isn't easily replacable... so Haskell has to be dropped until he can show he can add something to the game rather than the penalty count.
Moyes & O'Neill lead by example 4:57pm on 13 Feb 2009 ScottishScouser, it's arguable that MON has the money to spend at Villa. I think Lerner would dip into his pocket if his manager said it was necessary - Ashley Young was rather expensive wasn't he - and Chelsea don't like spending anymore.

Yes, it would be harder for him at Chelsea, but for exactly the same reason any manager would find it difficult: a demanding chairman and a set of players who think they are better than they are - especially the English contingent.

But I agree this article is a bit out of place. Topics in the news at the moment: England, Beckham, Scolari, Hiddink and maybe Middlesborough. Not really Moyes or MON.
