Apparently all our .goals were individual errors? What nonsense, all three were very well crafted and well taken. I also think you very much could criticise the original selection given how impressive the substitutes were when they came on.

The overall point about Darlo is a very good one, though. We learnt last season how know-how and experience are critical factors at this level and it's helping us again this season. Darlo look a poor side, though, with limited competitiveness in midfield and cutting edge up front.
Secrets of the fixture computer 5:06pm on 16 Jun 2009 'My only grumble about the fixtures is why local derbies no longer seem to be dated on Boxing Day or New Years' any more like they used to "in the old days". I would have thought that would have been a no brainer to program in and would add that bit of extra glamour to the fixture list.'

Clubs hate this and request otherwise. Boxing Day is always a big earner as is your derby, so why would you want them both on the same day? Police bill is higher on Boxing Day and for a derby, again why put them both on the same day and end up with a massive bill? That can create serious cash flow issues especially at lower levels.
No excuses for Newcastle 09:44am on 25 May 2009 What Newcastle need to do is go and get a good manager who has experience of promotion and knows his trade. Curbishley would be the perfect appointment and maybe he would drop into the Championship for what is a club with potential if run properly. Maybe even someone like Neil Warnock, who for all his antics has won 6 promotions in his managerial career.

But if they go the "legend" Shearer they are taking a huge gamble. The guy needed to get 6 points from 8 games, lower than the average they managed across the season, and couldn't manage it despite an easy run-in.

Horrendous management from top to bottom and the fans must take their share of the blame. Their expectations of style when Newcastle were not in a position to demand anything more than results and rebuilding drove out Allardyce who would have got them fighting for Europe in time and their protests over the "Messiah" who had not seen a game for 3 years before taking the job landed them with Joe Kinnear.
Woolford's dreams come true at Wembley 09:34am on 25 May 2009 Superb game at a ridiculous tempo in such heat. Woolford was the stand out player and would have been heading to the Championship whether Scunny had won or not.

BTW, the Millwall keeper is David Forde, not Andy.
Blatter blunders while Wada walks the beat 12:05pm on 13 May 2009 It's really an easy system, especially for team sports. As footballers have pointed out, if they are going to be at the training ground most days then ask the testers to come at that time. They have the choice of saying when they want to be tested, all they have to do is then stick to that. If the poor diddums get interrupted on their holidays once or twice, tough luck.

As pointed out by the previous poster, other systems give far too much leeway for cheats to systematically avoid getting caught.
Seven sports seek Olympic love 5:24pm on 27 Mar 2009 I have to say I'm against 7's for the reasons stated above. Yes it is a different form of the game but ultimately the vast majority of people play and watch the 15 a side version. It is a stripped down version of the real thing - the equivalent of 5 a side football just with a greater fuss made of it. There's sadly no way round that but it is a wonderful sport to watch.

It has to be squash's time with the game going far more global than ever before.
That time of the year many players dread 7:01pm on 26 Mar 2009 I have to say Gavin that your comment about the gap between L2 and the Non-League is one which is commonly said but is misconceived. Having seen my club Barnet go up between the leagues there are massive differences, especially between the teams in the bottom half of the leagues. L2 is much much more organised and tight in terms of time and space available on the ball. There are also far fewer weak links in each team to exploit. If you play down there any time soon you'd certainly find it much easier I think.
What's the point of indoor athletics? 4:20pm on 19 Feb 2009 Hackerjack it is indeed lesser than outdoors and I don't think you'd find any athlete who'd disagree beyond maybe a few 60m specialists.

But actually the points you attack Katherine on are wrong. Indoors can indeed build confidence and experience - for juniors running as many races as possible is generally a good thing to know what to do in competitions in th future.

You can break up training by going abroad but as you say not many can do that and even so it is not necessarily the ideal thing to do for all cases.

It depends on how you see them. For me I don't use them for reasons I've already explained, I know my training partners are more confident going into the new season on the back of very goood results. Neither party is wrong, it's about what works for each athlete.

I don't see anything fraudulent about having records and championships at all. It is different to running outdoors so it is separate but most people see them as of lesser importance. Saying they are useful is not the same as saying they have the same importance as outdoor events.
What's the point of indoor athletics? 12:34pm on 19 Feb 2009 Interesting article. My sprints group could almost be a test case for this.

Most of them have run indoors and generally done really well with a couple of them winning age group regional and national titles.

As I'm a CP athlete and we don't have any specific indoor events I don't do indoors because it doesn't really give me the feeling of a competition - it doesn't matter whether I win or lose to the people I run against as I'll never have to beat them in competitions that really count. Outdoors is all that matters to me as a result.

Be interesting to see how it pans out for all of us in the outdoor season - suspect they'll be sharper early on but I may have a better end to the season, which is when my big competitions are anyway.
Moyes & O'Neill lead by example 5:16pm on 13 Feb 2009 O'Neill has been considered for big jobs before in England Leeds wanted him back when they were top 4/5 both when Graham went and when O'Leary went and there were lots of rumours that Liverpool wanted him when Houllier was in charge and before Benitez was appointed. So essentially the only big job he hasn't been considered for since the turn of the millenium has been the Chelsea job when it has regularly come up. Reason being O'Neill is far too clever to want to go to such an unstable job, especially now he is building his own title challengers at Villa.

The reason he has been considered for big jobs is because he has actually done a good job at a big club before. Celtic may play in a lesser league but they have the same expectations as the supposed 'Big 4' of the title and a good Champions League run every season.

Moyes is less considered because can you really imagine Everton truly breaking the top 4 again and challenging for honours. They just seem too defensive with too little cutting edge. Plus it would be a hell of a gamble for a club wanting to win something every season and play in the Champions League every season to appoint a guy with little European experience who has ultimately won no major trophies in his career.

O'Neill by contrast has got to a lesser European final and been a Champions League regular at Celtic while winning 3 Scottish Titles, 3 Scottish Cups, 1 Scottish League Cup and 2 English League Cups. Not as big as Premiership or Champions League trophies but it still means he has led teams to silverware 9 times. Not such a risk as appointing Moyes.

Yes you could say Moyes hasn't been at a club like Celtic but we still don't know for sure that he could win things and why hasn't he won things at Everton when O'Neill did at a lesser club in Leicester.

Overall then O'Neill has a better resume to land a top job (regardless of what you think of their respective achievements) and has therefore been linked with top jobs while Moyes doesn't have a great resume for a top job despite being a top manager and therefore doesn't get linked with them. Therefore this article is not very good.
