Calman speaks 1:49pm on 15 Jun 2009 The threat of higher taxation with these proposals would be ever present and detrimental. Given the SNP's stated desire for local income tax combined with Calman's proposals that will likely raise stamp duty on 'expensive' homes and even more power to vary income tax nobody in their right mind would move to and invest in Scotland. of course the clever thing to do would be to have a benign tax regime to stimulate investment and growth to lift Scotland out of the doldrums but I would eat my hat if that ever came to pass. After all I did say clever!

Perhaps the last higher rate tax payer in Scotland could turn off the light when he/she deserts the sinking ship?

PS Why does Calman float from one committee to another casusing havoc and then moving on before the pigeos come home to roost? The medical profession is still having to endure the aftermath of his last 'reforms'!
He failed to lead 3:24pm on 19 May 2009 He has done the right thing. Yesterday his performance was as bad as ever...in recent days it has seemed that someone had prepared his statements for him and he could barely read them out competently. And no this isn't a class issue...the last 2 speakers were from poor working class backgrounds and were superb so drop that nonesense now!

He has had his snout in the trough and fought tooth and nail to avoid the FOI act revealing this sad state of affairs. There is no need to enoble him for what is largely regarded as undistinguished service and the thought of him with his snout in yet another trough will only disenfranchise the electorate even more...if that is possible.

We now need a radical modern speaker. The daft and no doubt hugely expensive outfit should be ditched. MP's need a proper salary to stop this grubby behaviour. Why not pitch it around 175k so that they will have a disincentive to fiddle with the top rate and would hopefully return it back to 40%! They should be banned from employing relatives as secretaries or 'researchers'. All tax perks available to MP's must be cancelled forthwith...they must be subject to tehe exact same tax laws as the rest of us. The hugely subsidised restauarants in the House should charge commercial rates saving us another £5m per annum. Having clapped eyes on some of Mr Martin's supporters this week they don't need huge lunches!
Daniels sacrifices bonus 2:05pm on 11 Feb 2009 The bonus culture is completely offensive. What on earth do some of them mean by a 'guaranteed bonus'? Does this mean they are paid a bonus irrespective of performance?

For senior bankers there should be a good salary but not the daft sums mentioned at the Treasury Select Committee yesterday. Even for senior bankers 300-500k would seem sufficient remuneration even to head up a sizeable bank. If the bank performs well he/she could be given a bonus in shares every 5 years not exceeding 50% of one years salary. Bonuses would not be paid in cash therefore incentivising long term share performance.

More minor minions down the food chain should be getting a salary like the rest of us. Bonuses should not be paid to people sitting in banks branches doing what is their job after all...and they certainly should not be getting this from the Taxpayer bailout.

The counter argument that we won't retain and recruit talented individuals to head banks unless huge salaries and bonuses are paid just doesn't wash any more...we stumped up and appear ot have been landed with non-qualified dross!
Not quite the full sorry 4:30pm on 10 Feb 2009 Sorry indeed! But it's not just the banks who should be sorry but the whole government who are only too ready to fleece us. We pay tax on earnings, on what we buy, on homes, fuel and even after death our families become liable for yet more tax. No wonder we have to borrow from banks whenever we need to buy anything even moderately expensive like a car...because there is so little left.

Perhaps some urgent re-ordering is required. Tightening of belts with less money spent on things that aren't really required (and goodness how Labour have loved those useless expensive projects like ID cards). Less money for 'consultants' brought in to advise government., fewer QUANGOS populated by has beens with snouts in the trough..just less government full stop!

Once this inefficient money laundering operation between government and banks stops perhaps they might be good enough to allow us to keep more of our hard earned cash and allow us to deliver the stimulus package to the economy on our own terms!
Faith in banks 11:52am on 20 Jan 2009 Hmmm....this is all a blow to Eck the Fish's (aka Alex Salmond's) desire for Scottish Independence. His much vaunted arc of wealth (Iceland, Ireland and Scotland) has now become the arc of insolvency! At least this may scupper his desire for a local income tax...surely nobody in their right mind would increase taxes at this time?
