Does the postal strike make sense? 12:58pm on 22 Oct 2009 Surely the BNP being forced to change it's constitution as a result of being elected to the European Parliament is a good thing. To me, it denotes the beginning of their demise, which is a good thing. They will not be able to survive the glare of heightened public scrutiny in the long term.

As a supporter of democracy, i think the BBC have made the right decision. The more people here what he has to say, the less they will vote for his party. Set against this, we have a lot of well intentioned people who seem to be suggesting that the general populous are too stupid to be exposed to his views. A lot of people will find this quite patronising and some may be tempted to protest at the ballot box in the obvious way. I think it is called the law of unintended consequence
New calls to ban the BNP 10:06am on 19 Oct 2009 I feel that the election of the BNP is the beginning of the end for them, as shown by their recent concession on membership. This would not have happened if they had not won these seats. I feel that this appearance on Question Time will be another nail in the coffin of this party.
I seem to remember a while ago that Margeret Hodge was condemned for suggesting that the BNP were a major threat to Labour in poor areas, because some of these poorer people felt they were being let down by Labour on housing and immigration issues. I get a sense that a lot of the opposition coming from the left has less to do with abhorence of the BNP's views and more to do with the ballot box. This to me shows the contempt that Labour holds the electorate in, believing people not to be intelligent enough to make up their own minds.
The BNP are disgusting, but they should not be banned. I can't help feeling that the oxygen of publicity will inevitably mean that they will crash and burn.
Is it right to bash the bankers? 10:29am on 28 Sep 2009 Dancingvalerie is right that incompetent and greedy people got us into this mess. An incompetent Chancellor failed to oversee the creation of a proper regulatory framework when he moved market regulation from the Bank of England to the FSA. This was because he was eager to get his greedy hands on the enormous taxes revenues that would be generated by lightly regulated markets.
Is it right to bash the bankers? 09:55am on 28 Sep 2009 Fingersgreen, i am the man that was on the radio. I was keeping it simple to try and get my point accross. Even if they only pay £250,00 a years in tax or there £1m, that is still a lot more tax than most of us will pay in 20 years of work. If they decide to go elsewhere because of bonus restrictions or higher taxes, it won't take many people in that pay bracket to leave before we all notice, starting with the ordinary city workers on £20-30k a year who will no longer have a job and then will no longer be paying taxes.
This situation has to be looked at holistically. Whether we like it or not, we need these people for now. In the future, when times are better we need to attempt to build an economy that is more balanced, with tax revenue coming from a broader range of economic activities. For the time being, however, we need every penny to get out of the hole we are in. A hole, i might add, that various Governments have to share the blame for through their lack of action in allowing of untested products and unstable funding strategies to flourish. This Govt is being disingenuous in the extreme when it tries to heap all the blame on everyone else. There is bame on all sides and David Buik's point about the bag of sweets is a good one.

Do you support cuts in public spending? 11:12am on 14 Sep 2009 When i was in financial trouble i identified what was essential spending and then viciously cut the rest. It worked and i am a long way down the road to recovery. If we don't do this as a nation, we will bw saddled with debts for generations that will stifle our chance to rebuild a wealthy and vibrant economy and provide opportunities for those that wish to take them.
Wouldn't it be great if we could get a Govt pragmatic enough to second some talent from well run private companies to show the Civil Service how it is done for a lot less.
Predict A Riot? 10:40am on 14 Sep 2009 If i went to my bank and said "times are very tough, can you lend me a load of money so that i can spend my way out of the problem? Oh, just one minor little thing, i don't think i am going to have enough income to pay you back in less than 40 odd years." I suspect that i would be advised to cut back on my outgoings and then shown the door marked exit fairly sharpish.
I don't see why it should be any different at Government level.

A Gay Soldier Speaks Out 10:39am on 27 Aug 2009 Does anyone care about this story? GCSE results have just come out, which i would have thought will be a lot more important and garner a lot more comment and interest from any listeners that are left.
Do we love the NHS? 09:36am on 14 Aug 2009 I think there is something in what Brian from Manchester says. If there was a small charge, perhaps some would be less inclined to waste NHS time and resourses.It does raise the issue, however, that those who work and just manage to get by might not go when they really should. However, where i take issue with him is that he only wants to charge those of us that contribute and not those on benefits. If someone on benefits is in hospital, they to have no expenses to cover and therefore, where practical, any benefits received during that time should go straight to the hospital. I am not talking about housing benefit and such like, i am talking about the bit that pays for the day to day stuff that LONG TERM and feckless benefit claiments, such as booze and gambling.
