Barclays: Even the bad times are good 1:56pm on 03 Aug 2009 I think there should be complete separation between the investment and retail arms of British banks. It was incompetent management, reckless speculation and government inertia within the investment sector that caused the banking crisis and all the resulting suffering. In future I think retail banks should be limited to good old-fashioned lending and savings so that the taxpayer is never again put in the position of bailing-out incompetence.

It would be interesting to know how much of the profits derived from the investment arm of Barclay actually resulted from speculation with money invested by savers in the retail arm.
Can non-execs cure banks' madness and badness? 10:51am on 16 Jul 2009 I don't agree with John's conclusions about the reasons for the banking sector collapse. Most people will agree that all our major banks invested heavily in US 'securities' founded on very risky property loans. When the world economy turned, these loans became bad debts and landed many institutions in deep faecal matter. It was pure management greed and incompetence, along with government paralysis and regulatory inertia that triggered this, and many are still fuming that those responsible are still sitting their jobs getting inflated salaries, huge bonuses and obscene pensions. The codes of conduct, the 'old boy' network, nods & winks have be replaced with solid rules and expendable-sized banks so that they can go to the wall if they fail to muster.

I watched the Daily Politics show today and heard you refer to 'a senior source'. IMHO any politician who refuses to be identified with a comment, view or opinion isn't worth quoting and provide information that is of no more value than red-top here-say, title-tattle and conjecture. I just wish TV and radio commentators would stop referring to them. To me, they are no better, and just as despicable as the government 'moles' that plagued previous administrations.
In the news today... 09:25am on 05 Feb 2009 Well done Mr Chiles. I used to think you were a decent bloke, but I suspect Carol Thatcher upset your Labourite, northern sensibilities and she had to go. And of course, the foul-mouthed Jo Brand could never be accused to offending anyone.
I think it's areal shame that the BBC seems to be suffocating in it's own political correctness and is not helped by the plonker you have as BBC 1 controller and I'm saddened that you have now become a part of this.
Carol was entertaining and inoffensive on air and probably the only intelligent member of the whole team. Shame on you!

For me they are all winners and those who can't see that are the poorer for it!
Hedge funds and VW: what a pile up! 10:44am on 30 Oct 2008 I'm sooooooh happy that these hedge funds have got shafted. I agree with the Germans - short selling should be abolished. It distorts and destabilises markets, affects jobs, companies and encourages scurrilous, ill-founded City rumours that undermine investor confidence. Good reputations are difficult to establish and are easily destroyed - and HFs are destructive.
Profiting from fear 11:04am on 16 Sep 2008 Short-selling like this is illegal in the US for precisely the reasons why HBOS is suffering right now. It should be banned here too, but it will take a far more competent chancellor and government than this bunch of no-hopers to do it!
HSBC: reform bankers' pay 09:05am on 13 Sep 2008 Many people were complaining about the greed, avarice and reward for failure at senior level in many sectors of British business a long time ago. It is simply not good enough that these people start wringing their hands after the event. The damage has already been done. More needs to be done by government to regulate executive pay and bonuses and they can do this via the tax system instead of putting all the pressure on low/middle income earners.
To swear or not to swear 10:34am on 03 Sep 2008 I’ve been a BBC viewer (and listener) for over 50 years. During that time I have seen standards gradually slip and it’s terribly disappointing to see such a great broadcaster that once set the standards for decorum now joining other broadcasters reflecting the lowest common denominator.

I am not a prude – I’ve spent many hours in sports changing rooms and there is not an expletive I haven’t hear or used myself, but I don’t want to hear that sort of language broadcast on the radio or television.

Recently, I’ve heard BBC news presenters using phrases like ‘pissed off’ and “cock-up” at viewing times when children could be watching. It sets a poor example to easily influenced minds and reflects badly on the corporation. I hope the BBC addresses these issues.
