The fight over a Blair presidency 6:23pm on 25 Oct 2009 A L Blair, Esq, Late of this parish seeks to publish the bans of his betrothal to all things EU, just so he can get his hands on another pension & beam in the spotlight of personal self-engrandisement as per N Kinnock et al.
But, the Presidency of the Council of Europe is not for him. Teflon Tone needs to answer for the mess that he, & his estwhile sidekick J G Brown, have left for future generations.

Iraq war inquiry - lessons to be learnt 6:35pm on 15 Jun 2009 When allied to the recent pronouncements about the need to protect Cabinet papers from the FoI, this announcement about the enquiry being held in private, has the whiff & bluster of the Establishment telling us that they know best.
This is not a plank in building confidence of the people in their leaders. The recent hollow ring of confidence in politics, both with a capital & small case initial, is rattled to the core.
The pressure for protectionism 4:44pm on 30 Jan 2009 How does Gordon Browns' professed & much trumpeted support for 'the knowledge economy' square with the inability to get jobs in Britain filled by qualified British workers, when importing workers from Italy suits the French owned company?
Economics is not a dry subject: it is the cause of grief, as well as projecting or tracking profit.
With GB spouting away at Davos, whilst the engines of economic growth are dismantled or sourced by imported labour, we are steaming towards the Iceberg eventual meltdown.
It is not protectionism to expect that locally sourced labour should have a chance of employment in straitened times.
Going outside the flags 5:13pm on 02 Jan 2009 Australia has more going for it than fickle international demand for commodities or some notional valuation on the true 'Good Life'.
Money doesn't matter when the way around practical problems are not necessarily linked to easy cash. If a little hardship refocusses some, who are too reliant on fast-food outlets, then it will be a good thing.
Social Values - doing the right thing or the concept of the Australian Way - linked to independently minded, self-sufficient people with a can-do attitude - these are truly bankable assets.
We are the banks 2:03pm on 24 Dec 2008 How can a country that abandoned manufacturing as a basis for the economy, that lacks most raw materials, that has seen the much trumpeted value-added financial system melt away; get a pass to the sunny uplands of stability & personal solvency?
Like Harold Wilson's 'pound in your pocket has not been devalued''; the present PM is spinning the bulk of problems away from the current taxpaying voters into some mythical balance sheet that will hang around anyone left living on these shores for generations to come.
Banking is bankrupt. Greed has done for us, despite the greedy being mostly a motley crew of spivs & bankers who have kept the ill-gotten gains.

Serious questions to answer 05:56am on 06 Dec 2008 You burble on about "he question that was put again and again to David Cameron" in the last paragraph. Was that for effect or some kind of 'word count' balance between the parties?
A better question would be about the silence of the present PM, once a profound user of leaks whilst in opposition.
Cameron has little to answer for on holding the government to account. Whereas Brown leads a spin machine, covering their tracks & altering the rights of citizens, daily.
56 nations: one goal 05:49am on 06 Dec 2008 The triumph of the human spirit, over adversity, is seldom celebrated with such verve as in Australia.
I was in Melbourne a couple of weeks ago - the spring sunshine & showers were certainly more inviting than now, being back in the UK. Melbourne lifted my spirits: so no wonder an Scottish ex-homeless, ex-drug dealer feels better whilst there.

However, speculating on the significance of suggested absence of particular references in the Governor of the BoE's speech does seem to be generating the news, not reporting upon it.
What is the next step? Suggesting that you could run the BoE with 20/20 hindsight? As a journo you are blessed with so many skills.
A Doctor's Note 10:10pm on 13 Sep 2008 There was an advert on the TV in the 50's - 'get the strength of the insurance companies around you'. The fellow academics are the shield for those further up the greasy pole than relatively junior but professional functionaries.
Once upon a time we all shut our mouths & expected deference from juniors: that was a different world.
The great & good need to get real before they are cast from their pinacles of self-congratulation.
