Is it time for higher taxes for the rich? 11:26am on 09 Dec 2009 "It's Alistair Darling's pre-Budget report today - the last before the general election. Sources say Mr Darling will speak of the case for fairer taxes. He's already announced increases in the top rate of tax and national insurance and it is possible there may be a further rise today."

It seems he's to announce a boiler scrappage scheme too, for green purposes but also to support British manufacturing. With this governments record (army truck deal, etc.) it wouldn't surprise me to find the boiler of choice is produced across the Channel. In any case, what British manufacturing...?
Is it time for higher taxes for the rich? 09:23am on 09 Dec 2009 The last Labour government, with their union chums, set manufacturing on the path to destruction. Now they're hell-bent on destroying, or driving away, the financial sector. That'll only leave the service sector - and I suppose they'll go after that to finally finish off the country if we're ever stupid enough to elect Labour again. Funny how, if Labour are so wonderful, they always leave the country in a mess and it takes years of an unpopular Tory government to fix it and leave the country thriving and economy growing, isn't it? Still, with people having long memories and Labours core vote seemingly deserting to the BNP or staying at home, I don't think we'll be seeing Labour on the government benches again for a very, very long time.

It's because, if they let us talk about the Johnson speech, they'll have on display all sorts of opinions that don't toe the party line or agree with their agenda...!
Another bailout for banks - a good use of our money? 09:24am on 03 Nov 2009 The bank bail-out would have worked fine if the money had been used to rationalise and stimulate lending. Instead it has gone on fat cat salaries and even higher bonuses. The government could have acted to stop this - even brought in emergency legislation to curb the excess and force lending to business - but has fumbled the ball. Again. Another failure from a washed-up, worn out, dithering, incompetent government.
BBC ID - the new comment system 09:21am on 03 Nov 2009 Only upgrade it once? I've had to sign in, then follow the links then confirm FIVE times since the change, despite setting "remember me" and NOT deleting cookies, etc.

The new system was rolled out as a "beta" by the looks of it - how very Microsoft to push something before it's been made to work properly!

This is the same comment as I made on VDs blog, where the same entry has been made. On another blog entry Bowbrick has admonished me for posting the same or similar comment more than once - but what does he expect if the blogs for two separate programmes that the user may wish to follow and "interact" with cover the same topic, albeit in slightly different ways? Are our opinions less valid for one programme than the other? When we had the messageboards there was one index where you could see what topics were already available for comment (assuming the OP gave it a sensible, relevant title) and duplicate threads were removed. It is a "house rule" that there could only be one thread per topic but that seems to have been ignored for this new system. Yet apparently expressing our opinion twice, once for each separate programme, is spam and OUR fault!!
