Benitez and Scolari face vital test 4:33pm on 30 Jan 2009 I expect draws in both games.

Yes, there's always the chance Ronaldo, Gerrard or Lampard coming up with a piece of brilliance but let's face it - chances are Everton will defend and defend well; Chelsea will be mindful of the losses to Liverpool and United, and Liverpool under Benitez are incapable of going for it.

Benitez will see this match as one not to lose. Then he'll bank on a resurgence and a United collapse.

Wouldn't bet on the latter...

If he finishes second he'll point to the improvement his squad has made but the fans will look at Lucas, the lack of ambition against ten men Arsenal etc....

Don't see Benitez at Anfield next season.

I challenge Macnulty - still apparently desperate to cling on to the idea of Raffa making even ONE valid point during his tasteless tirade against a fellow pro - to take the Spaniard's dossier and analyse the 'facts'.

A lot of conjecture, self contradictory and interchangeable with himself and Wenger at the very least.

None of what he said - even if it were true - would be relevant to Liverpool f.c. And as we have seen it's only served to rev his rivals up and put unnecessary pressure on his own team.

In short, a massive unqualified disaster of a showing.

I don't say this lightly: sack him if you want any chance whatsoever of winning the Premier League in the next five years.

Liverpool are two world class players away from being a world class side.

Alonso, Mascherano, Gerrard and Torres can be added to over a couple of seasons IF the board have any kind of faith in Benitez - does anyone seriously believe that's going to be the case come May?

He nearly offloaded Alonso in the summer: what happens if he continues to shine? Will his loyalties continue to lie with a trophyless Benitez led side if the big boys come a knocking?? And is Torres going to be happy playing for the English version of Athletico all his career? Doubtful.

Do not trust in Raffa, he's a liability at this level.
Benitez continues defiant approach 2:21pm on 11 Jan 2009 So much wishful thinking going on in the press and on the forums.

Benitez made a monkey of himself and his team with that little outburst. Only the most myopic of Liverpool fans would've read what he said and thought "great, that should rev the lads up!".

The LAST thing Liverpool needed was any more unwelcome attention after the Gerrard controversy.

They need a steady hand at the tiller, a cool head plotting their course.

Instead they get a bloke staying up all night and writing down a personal attack on a manager two places below him.

Full of contradictions and hypocrisy, the dossier was laughable to anyone with a half a clue and no axe to grind.

Nothing to do with Fergy's 'genius' at mind games - this was like shooting fish in a barrel.

I love the singing though. The yanks are jealous, the best they could ever come up with was "U.S.A!". Ha!

Hate to say it but I'm expecting a better performance with Hatton's new trainer in the corner. I know Graham tried to get Ricky to use his excellent jab more, but something tells me he might actually listen to a trainer he doesn't know quite so well...

If Hatton could manage to be slightly less face first he might still be a true world beater - even at welterweight. It's only his reach that lets him down, he still has the speed to get around that if he fights smart and with controlled aggression.

I maintain that he could've beaten Mayweather with a fairer ref and a different trainer (not Graham's fault, just their relationship got in the way I reckon).
Mayweather doesn't like a good jab.

As it is they've earned one point and are going out. I think that's ridiculous.

At least Nakamura could've had a few free kicks if they'd have been attacking all the time!

He should've listened to Fergy and kept his head down a bit more, especially when he winged that boot at his noggin.

I just find it a bit sad that he's trying desperately to stay on the periphery of the England side. But maybe he doesn't, so good luck to the fella.
Capello unlocks Rooney gifts 11:19am on 16 Oct 2008 I agree antisback. I love watching Scholes keep things ticking over while Ronaldo and co reap the plaudits. And I saw some of that guile and composure in Lampard's game in Belarus.

Given that Gerrard had a better game too, you'd think that their central midfield partnership days are well and truly over.

Give over, Rooney is playing well for his club so he's playing well for England.

The only thing Cappelo could do is mess it up; he hasn't, which is something I suppose.

His current form is no great revelation to United fans. Even when he's bad he's good!

He's gone through a bit of a transition, that I'll grant you, but even when he's been played as a lone striker - or out wide - he's always been good value.

You make a good point about his strike partner though; Rooney has to be the main man, players have to be looking for him. And Rooney will reciprocate - greedy he's not. He just has to continue this at club level though, because Ronaldo is coming back to full fitness and he'll be only too happy to take the reins in United's attack - Rooney scoring puts pressure on Ron to provide. Berbatov's presence should help with that too, there's no way he'll kow tow to Ronaldo.

As for Gerrard and Lampard; there has to be a passer in midfield, someone who can pick up a lose pass from lesser players and extrapolate himself from danger. Lampard would appear to be that Scholes, I mean man...

After that I don't really care where Gerrard plays - if at all.

Clearly Cappelo's gameplan last night was to copy Ferguson's approach, have Gerrard roaming Ronaldo style, solid defence, good passing midfield with a bit of bite, attacks coming from everywhere...

The fluidity that United and Arsenal - and even Chelsea to an extent - show up front is finally starting to be translated over to England. Gerrard is perhaps a late convert but he proved that he has the ability to go with it last night. There's a good mix of ages in that team too. Who knows? Could be the dawn of a golden age for the national side.
