Weather report 12:52pm on 24 Sep 2009 IS IT GOING TO RAIN?

The weather forecasts are just too detailed. TOO DETAILED!

We don't need to hear the range of temperatures, such as "temperatures of 12-14, increasing to perhaps 16 later in the day", or things like "patches of rain, dying out in the west overnight".

The late BBC radio producer John Walters (or was it Arthur Smith? It was one of those regular sepulchral voices) once did a hilarious and memorable chat about weather forecasts, saying that all we needed to know was, 'is it going to rain?'.

Perhaps, like the shipping forecast, there could be a couple of daily forecasts for weather nerds and autistic savants, and the rest of it could be 15 second forecasts for the rest of us.

I mean, come on, we know roughly what it's going to be like. Even climate change won't dramatically affect the weather forecast. The plants might notice a degree or two of difference, but we won't.

Will it be warmer or colder than usual? IS IT GOING TO RAIN?

Suggest a story 9:44pm on 16 Jun 2009 I'm dismayed to hear about the proposed digital switchover from FM. Two reasons:

1. I like to listen with two or more radios around the house in different rooms. I've tried four or five DAB radios,but they all have different delays in their signal processing time, and they all lag the FM signal by several seconds. Indeed, one of the DAB/FM radios even had a delay in FM reception. The result is a cacophony - you just can't have more than one DAB radio on at the same time in the same room.

2. The sound quality is usually compressed and poor, and the more 'musical' the station, the worse it sounds.

I can perhaps cope with No. 2 - that is, goodbye good sound quality on live radio. Live concerts in high quality will be a thing of the past, and I'll have to fileshare and copy my music instead. OK, I'll do that if the BBC wishes.

But No. 1 worries me more. AND NOBODY IS MENTIONING THIS.

Please would you find out what the BBC or the govt are doing about the signal processing delays in equipment that make it impossible to listen to two radios at the same time. Will it mean the end of listening with radios in separate rooms?
"Could someone with a West Country accent ever become Prime Minister?" 10:39pm on 19 May 2009 I have 'received pronunciation', and I've cultivated it over the years, with pride. The point of RP isn't that it's posh, but that it's NON-REGIONAL. I like not being identified with any particular place in the UK.

And that's why I oppose having announcers with regional accents on national radio. For example, Kathy Clugston and Neil Nunes have gorgeous voices, but every time I hear them, their accents convey 'place', and that gets in the way for me. Great as voiceovers, not as continuity or news reading.

I'll make an exception for a well-spoken Scot, preferably from somewhere in the middle of the East coast, such as Dundee. They can sound very non-regional. I don't think 'Scotland' when I hear Susan Rae, for example. I hear 'Britain', or even 'The World'.

The upshot, he implied, was that Austin M is a bad spokesman for the right to photograph in public.
Cyber-threats in Virtual Worlds and Beyond 09:31am on 04 Mar 2008 Strange - I thought that the internet was invented in the first place to be resistant to attack (e.g. nuclear war, etc)?

Either it's been compromised by commercialisation, or its design was flawed in the first place.
