Capello and Barwick suffer as England struggle 09:18am on 21 Aug 2008 My 2 cents on the England performance:

I believe Capello when he claims the players lined up in a 4-3-2-1 formation. What was clear was how tactically naive these players, namely the midfield, were.

The 3 (Barry, Lampard and Beckham) chased the ball, leaving holes at the back. There was no defined holding player. There was no spacial awareness. I dont necessarily blame Capello for this - playing 3 across the middle is a straight forward concept. Indeed Barry does it at Villa, and Lampard did it under Mourinho.

Rooney and Gerrard clearly had free roles off Defoe, but in doing so they dropped too deep. In theory the idea is a good one, but only in front of a functioning midfield and behind a capable centre forward. Defoe is a decent striker, but cannot lead the line as in this situation.

Once again players seemed lost and confused. Either the manager is not explaining their roles clearly enough, or English players are not capable of filling positions that arent natural to a 4-4-2.
Capello and Barwick suffer as England struggle 09:07am on 21 Aug 2008 I'm sorry, landing a top coach at the cost of 4/5/6m a year (Ive lost count) doesnt strike me as an achievement.

Barwick represents everything that is wrong in the game: he throws money at situations he doesnt understand. During his tenure the FA must have forked out in the region of 20m to 3 England managers.

Ferdinand is surely considered the outstanding defender in Europe right now, whereas the likes of King and Woodgate are strong contenders to Terry's starting position.

I stand by my point about Murray being inconsistent. For the last yr or so he has threatened to cement his place in the top 10 that his talent deserves. A good run at the start of the yr was met with a poor showing at the aussie open (ok, his opponent had a decent tournament). Ok, his form has been good since Wimbledon, and maybe now he has matured enough to claim his place at the top. But I suspect frustrating times will continue for a while...
Move over Murray, these Games ain't for you 6:47pm on 11 Aug 2008 Motty, I am aware how big the masters are, but they are still not on par with the 4 majors. I consider myself a tennis fan, but I couldnt name the winners of all the masters tournaments this yr.

My point was their is a national sporting hierarchy which the media will naturally follow. Football is miles ahead at the top, with cricket and rugby 2nd tier. I said that tennis was 2nd class, whereas in reality it is 3rd tier with golf and motorsport. It is clearly above athletics (apart from when the olympics is on), boxing, etc etc.

The england cricket captain is a high profile postion, so for him to resign is pretty big. This is only escalated by the fact that Vaughan had been in place for 5/6 yrs, had won the Ashes and been the 2nd most successful captain.
Move over Murray, these Games ain't for you 6:28pm on 11 Aug 2008 Can some people get over the 'anti scotland' rubbish. The reason Murrays win wasnt top story was that cricket is a bigger sport and Vaughans resignation was pretty huge. If Murray wins a major I think it would jump straight to the top of the news. Like tennis, golf is a 2nd class sport, but Harrington won a major at a time when cricket, rugby and football had nothing too big to shout about.

The reason Murray is criticised is because despite his undoubted talent, he constantly marginalises his fanbase and his form is consistently inconsistent.

As an Englishman, I havent warmed to Murray, but I was impressed with his Wimbledon performance and his masters win. However, it hasnt surprised me to see him sulk his way out of the Olympics.

PS: considering the amount of scots that vent their displeasure at having to represent a joint British team, I dont think anyone North of the border has any right claiming that the BBC or anyone else show them disrespect
You Are The Ref answer and suggestions 7:25pm on 24 Jun 2008 The home team's striker is clearly standing 15 yards offside while his teammates pass the ball around the back. The defending away team have pushed upfield as the ball is deep in their opponents half. The home team's right winger is standing on the right touchline, and appears to have little interest in moving or getting involved in the game.

Suddenly the right back fires the ball strategically against an oncoming player and the ball ricochets off the field, close to where the winger is standing. Instantly the home ball boys give him a ball and he delivers a long throw to the striker upfield, who finds himself 15 yards ahead of the defence and through on goal. He duly scores.

The away side are furious. They argue the move was planned and thus the offside striker was interfering with play prior to the throw on being taken. They also complain about the speed at which the ball was delivered by the ball boys. Can the goal be disallowed?
You Are The Ref answer and suggestions 7:12pm on 24 Jun 2008 Germany vs Turkey. A long punt forward forward from Metzelder sees Rustu come to the edge of the area to punch the ball clear. However, in doing so he falls over, leaving an open goal, and the ball falls to the feet of Ballack. Ballack hits it cleanly and the ball goes in, but clips your feet on the way through.

Ballacks shot seemed to be on target, and there were no defenders close enough to prevent the goal. The Germans are adamant that the goal should stand, as your 'touch' failed to make a difference, but the Turks claim this to be irrelevant, and the goal cannot stand. What do you do?
Host nations should be made to qualify 6:00pm on 06 Jun 2008 The debate should not be whether austria and switzerland should have had to qualify, but whether they should have been chosen to host the competition in the first place. Neither country deserves it on footballing merit, and there seems to be little public interest. I agree that the host should not have to qualify, but should still have some footballing right to compete.

The known footballing superpowers of England (?), Italy, Spain, France, Portugal, Germany and Holland, will always host the majority of european champs, but it is understandably important to occasionally take the experience to other countries as well. Surely it would be better to award successful sides, such as Turkey, Russia, Czech Republic, Greece or Sweden, rather than taking the competition to nations with little chance of competing. Obviously the host must prove capable of running such an event, but I could see Russia being more than capable, as would joint hosts Sweden/Denmark. All these nations would stand a good chance of qualifying anyway.
