The battle over content 11:33am on 08 Apr 2009 Until Google starts selling music, there will be no sustainable business model for YouTube. Let's take a look at how I purchase music...

1. I hear a song on the radio, on the bus, at a club, somewhere and not down the lyrics/song title.

2. I search the lyrics online and locate the song title by searching song lyric websites which use content from songwriters which no doubt the song writers would like to profit from that stolen content.

3. With the song title, I use YouTube to confirm that I've found the song I'm looking for or to determine the cover version I'm looking for.

4. I open up iTunes and download the tune. This is the point where everyone involved in that chain should get their money, not a moment before.

Sadly the recording industry want to take a few pence at every stage of the chain.

It would be like Tesco trying to charge you to walk around the store, and to charge you for a tiny sample of cheese to decide if you want the "really really mature cheddar" or the "only sort of mature cheddar" and then, once you get to the checkout, charging you for the cheddar.

Instead, the recording industry should do what Tesco actually do, invite you into the store, give you lots and lots of little bits of cheese (a loss leader, if you will) and only take any money when you reach the checkout with cheese in hand.

YouTube etc should be considered by the recording industry as a loss leader of sorts leading to the eventual sale later on!

(And yes, I appreciate that buying cheese is not the best analogy but you get my point and I bet you really want some Cheddar now!)

Canvas and the connected home 11:19am on 12 Dec 2008 I'm of the opinion that now is the time for all out ISPs to come together and admit that they made a mistake. Admit that there is a last mile problem and start working out what we can do about it, a solution that is great value for customers and good value for ISPs.

Without such an admission, all this technical innovation is in vane as without the appropriate infrastructure, none of the current innovations will be properly enjoyed.

And if we do nothing, the problem will only get worse. The landscape of media consumption is changing and there is now or soon to be a generation of consumers who turn to IP based broadcast networks before they'll look towards the more traditional broadcast channels.

Looking back over the last seven or so days, only around 20% of my TV viewing has been done sat in front of the television. With iPlayer et al and my SlingBox I really don't see much need for the television set anymore.

As for Bill's set up - I love it. I've been thinking about a similar set up and now that the projectors and other hardware is inexpensive I doubt I'll be delaying much longer.

Wikipedia is censored 10:49am on 08 Dec 2008 Rory, a while ago you asked who polices the internet and I was so tempted to write back a witty comment along the lines of 'Er, the police police the internet' and I think that is something that holds true here.

Firstly, let me make it clear that protecting children is all good and well, but this is NOT the right way to go about it.

As previous commenter have already mentioned, the image in question depicting a naked pre-pubescent girl, is 'potential illegal'. I, as a human, am 'potentially' a murderer. Should some self appointed organization lock me up or prevent me from being around loving things for the potential of me murdering someone? I think not!

Laws are in place to prevent wrongdoing, I don't need the IWF 'protecting me'. It is a slippery slope. What's next? Physics resources banned for fear of someone making a dirty bomb.

Policing the internet is the responsibility of the police, not some self-appointed body. And even then, this country does not need branches of the Information Police opening up shop all over the place.

In other news, my good for nothing ISP appears to not be in bed with the IWF. So I'm free from transparent content filtering for the moment...
Close to you? 2:51pm on 18 Nov 2008 Rory, I want you on Twitter as a regular guy Tweeting his life; I don't want you on Twitter as a BBC exercise in getting to know me (and the audience at large) better.

When a large organization starts an official Twitter account, I find it rarely adds value to my interactions with that organization nor my experience on Twitter.

When an individual posts on Twitter about their life, part of their posts will include their work. And that is very interesting. I'm as much about following your work life as I am following your personal life on twitter. One adds balance to the other.

And the occasional tweet about your home life helps me better understand your reporting and your areas of interest and expertise.

One thing that bothers me to no end on the BBC News website is the distinct lack of by-lines on reports naming the author. Without knowing who wrote the report how can I tell from which perspective they are coming from.
Mobile money - coming soon? 8:38pm on 14 Nov 2008 All good, great and lovely; but I don't want to have even more of my (hard earned) cash tied up in some other person's payment system,

I have £25 locked up in Starbucks, £15 in Costa, a huge £45 in Oyster Card (and I'm not even a Londoner and so on.

Whoever works out an easy to use payment system that does not require me to pre-pay, if you like, will be a very rich person...
Is your granny a gamer? 11:57am on 05 Nov 2008 @12, I think we will continue to play the games we play now long into old-age but I'm not too sure if we'll adapt to playing the games of the next generation(s).
Surfing the election 11:54am on 05 Nov 2008 The web didn't work for me this year. It did in as much as it allowed me to have a few different video feeds coming in from around the world but the text based coverage seemed a little slow to me.

The BBC bloggers added nothing to the TV broadcasts and I didn't know if they were actually blogging or just reading out peoples Tweets from Twitter.

The only online overage that really worked for me was 66ourvote's Election Protection Twitter timeline.

But tell me something, the Election studio was CGI right? Why can't news broadcasters resist the temptation of fully Greenscreen 'election headquarters'?
Is your granny a gamer? 4:29pm on 03 Nov 2008 So granny isn't playing WoW. All surveys involve some sort of number 'fudging' so this is no surprise really.

As for commenter five, I don't want to know that granny is getting 'down and dirty' online. But on a similar point, I've just set my grandmother up with Sky TV and the only channels she can find (an her attempts to find BBC 1) are the Adult channels on the EPG.

Every now and then I get a phone call taking if I'd go and sort out her television - by returning the volume to a reasonable level (she knows where the volume up key is, hasn't found the volume down key yet) and switching the TV back to the good ole BBC. (I'm now using the (grand)parental controls to disable the Adult shows.)

I think serious work needs to be done to help the older generation master technology. I think they are getting a raw deal right now, with handed down ancient computers. Lets get them new computers, loaded up with WoW and a nice fast internet connection. And even a social network aimed at their demographic - help with the loneliness often associated with those liking alone. :-)
