Ergo, perhaps one of your investigations might be on the importance/value of new media in politics? Sad, no journalist in Scotland seemingly wishes to pick up such an obvious story - I wonder why?

Oh wait - Mrs.Brown is a popular twitterer right? Couldn't you create the means for a show on that wee ship?

Irrespective of the fact that you - and others - have done a grand job of ignoring such an obvious swell of pro-SNP feeling.

The people who pick up the papers with one hand, and throw it in the bin.

The people who flick through the channels, stopping for about 8-nanoseconds on whatever Glenn Campbell drivel/attack is being spouted at [place name of SNP politician here] - before sighing wearily and flicking on the Discovery channel.

This was absolute drivel from the BBC. Journalism is supposed to reflect opinion, in an unbiased manner.

Sadly, the BBC declined entirely to match like-for-like. Mention McConnell - but hush hush with McLeish. Mention overwhelming supportt from Scottish faiths and due Scots Law process - naaaaah, what's that got to do with it?

Mention the UK silence, because they DESIRE this release? Nah. American posturing when THEY desire the release...nahhhhh.

Mention the feelins of UK families who AGREE with the release? Nahhhhhh.

Absolute drivel - entirely perplexed by the idiocy of this dreadful, lopsided, sensationalist 'reporting'....

Finally, no SNP party member is planning on HUGGING Gaddafi like a certain Mr. Blair - and you have the audacity to judge the SNP?? THAT is a REAL insult to the dead.
What did you think of The One Show? Guest: Adam Sandler 7:12pm on 24 Aug 2009 The One Show is doing an appalling job of showing the opinion of Scots on the Megrahi release. 2 think it's right - 10 think it's not? How about:

- Mentioning in the same breath as McConnell the FACT that the other ex-Labour first minister firmly agrees with the decision?

- The overwhelming support of the various faiths in Scotland for the decision?

- The fact that many UK families IN NO WAY believe this man done anything.

Some of the comments were absurd. It seems his death isn't enough!

And that elevates us above him how?

Finally - HOW DARE people do not simply understand Scots law is different from America or English law and HOW DARE American and British mass media morally judge our political representatives when our Scots lads, with others, are dying in NOW in Afghanistan! Americans judge US on morals!

Disgraceful reporting from the BBC, absolutely appalling and deeply hurtful.
Turning up the heat 08:47am on 29 Jun 2009 Hey Brian, watched the programme with interest. However, unlike the bulk of the comments above, including many from those who share my pro-independence stance, I thought there was far more room for criticism.

The whole backbone of your study centered on identity - fine.

And, no sooner was the cup of tea in hand, than you wheeled up your wee pasting table, complete with tartan shawl, cold haggis, shortbread, and irn bru cans.

Sir, are you serious?

Your answer would doubtless be 'no' - yet, nevertheless, you feel content to start a documentary over the serious notion of modern Scottish identity with the trinkets associated with tartan rash and the 'tottie scone vibe'. In other words, exactly the imagery that many unionists use to brand serious questions over Scottish identity and futures with their 'gonk stamp'.

And who can take that seriously? Scottish culture comes from a real historical perspective, not that you came with 200-kilometres of representing that.

Don't know if you went the full hog to represent your take on identity Brian - wasn't sure if the deep fried mars bar was there?

Truly, a cringe worthy, embarrassing and quite patronising start to your programme.

If the study here was identity, and tying that into *political* choice, why didn't you present the facts which relate to such choices, and turn a discussion round this?

Why don't you, or any of your colleagues, map out a factual history of Scotland in the Union for the last 50-years? The realities of the big questions and opportunities going past 2010 and beyond. Financial freedom? Resource management through climate change?

Recently, we seen exactly that in a Gaelic documentary that touches on, amongst other things the British govts. marked and deliberate attempts to foil any notion of Scottish liberty, to set-up key nationalist figures, the out-right theft [and cover up] of the oil wealth in the 70's?

Do such topics merit any kind of place in a discussion about, effectively, Scotland in Britain? I think so. I simply cannot fathom the stance here Brian. If Norwegian democracy had been born of similar circumstances, I wonder if you would have nipped over to Oslo at all Brian?

You represent the choices, quite simply, via:

- Norway. While this was a very pertinent example, Norwegian democracy comes from a different brew than the circumstances that have led to the debate over Scottish democracy. While these are equally tangible, they are not as modern - and frankly - not daubed with the manipulation and lies we see from Westminster. You generally painted them as a small, insecure, nation - celebrating it's culture because if it didn't it wouldn't 'feel' Norwegian.

- Texas. ?????. I mean, are you having a laugh? BBC Scotland decides the best representation of harmony in a union is to compare Scotland to a 200-hundred-year old American state?

I appreciate the Texan sense of identity, but as you yourself pointed out, it's not that Texas would ever harbour ANY kind of notion about dropping from their union...

Then why use it? WHY use it Brian? It was absolutely irrelevant. This is journalism with a misleading slant. A woeful attempt at driving home the message that you don't have to be independent to keep your identity.

Then we had the usual contradictions and inaccuracies born of the unionist camp, none of which were questioned in even the most fundamental way.

- A modern independent Scotland = Gordon Brown's 'isolationist' nonsense
Q: Isn't the concept of a non-political union much more eloquent and relevant in the 21st century than a forced political one which questionably does not serve Scotland?

- Boris and the subsidy myth
Q: Tell me Boris, what do you think of the natural answer here, to avoid arguments - that Scotland goes its own way? You take yours, we'll take ours.

- Cameron's 'respect' for Scotland
Q: Mr. Cameron, do you believe the intrinsic democratic right of a nation to say 'no' is worthy of respect? Do you believe that the weapons might just rest instead where they are effectively being voted in?

On a final note Brian, I couldn't help but notice there was no attempt at linking/plugging/mentioning the BBC Panorama programme scheduled tonight for UK broadcast. What's it called?

'Will the Scots Ever Be Happy?'

What's the matter, weren't you keen to plug your BBC colleagues second look at devolution? Identity?

In all honesty Brian, if Scotland ever does get independence, I think the lack-lustre muted journalism born of this age - with your name amongst the markings - will stand out for all the wrong reasons.

You best get yourself a wee piece of shortbread to wash down your irn-bru. In the meantime, I'll go off and try to explain to my kids why a modern Scottish identity is one to be excited about, in so many different ways.

Crucial duel 2:25pm on 01 Nov 2008 Ummm - I've really no idea why a series of my mails earlier were nipped by the Mod. My assumption was that this was due to using an external website address - which I removed - merely citing a resource people might want to visit.

I then apologised to oldnat at #283 for the caps - sterling point.

Both were rejected.

Why? I'm all for moderation - but would appreciate a response or rationale in each case.
Crucial duel 01:04am on 01 Nov 2008 I am AMAZED at the sheer lack of substance in the Labour attacks in the campaign visits. 'The North Britisher 'Scotsman' even refers to it as a 'savaging'?

Correct me if I'm wrong - but the journalism should be in context of what was said, no?

So - we could perhaps attribute Darling's weekend interview as one where he was 'savaged'.

But let's look at Brown's 'savaging' here. Let's summarise.

'SNP make wrong decisions. They are letting Scotland down. SNP only talk about oil. Small is bad, small countries cannot cope. Scotland is stronger in the union. We understand these are bad times. We make good decisions. We make fair decisions. The SNP make wrong judgments. The SNP make wrong decisions - about big things. We make the right decisions. Labour make the right decisions'.

Scary back-beat, huh? Has anyone ever read/seen 1984? Amusing to think that Orwell may have pondered a Brown like character when he was listening to the wild moor winds off his croft in Barnhill, Jura, so many years ago.

People, especially the people of Glenrothes. Forget the Labour spin. Forget any local quibbles they are trying to manipulate and emphasise. Was everything plain-sailing in the previous Lab-council? Really?

Look at the BIGGER picture. Look at the words. Look at the lies.

Pull it apart.

The SNP are NOT only oil driven. The UK NEEDS oil for war and other reasons.

Dozens and DOZENS of small countries are coping, quite happily, unaffected by debt - as this UK is - right now.

Gordon Brown has made HUGE, ENORMOUS, COLD and FAR-REACHING mistakes on a truly GLOBAL scale that have directly contributed to the position in the first place.

Browns words are empty - completely vacant of substance. The comments about the SNP are sound bites, with no references, and certainly no degree of truth. What bad decisions?

The decision to fight unrequired nuclear weapons and power-stations? The decision to fight unfair council tax? The decision to complain, formally, about the influence of London led media? School meals? Prescription charges?

If this is what a minority SNP government can do, with a rabid unionist pravda-esque media backed by dark lords like Mandelson - well, you have to wonder what we could do beyond that.

See through the Labour LIES Scotland. DEFY the unionist press and all their machinations Glenrothes. Look at the bigger picture, and send Mr.Brown back down to where he feels comfortable - in London, England - inventing news to lie to the Scottish nation, whilst absorbing and utilising EVERYTHING this country has to offer on concerns that have NO relevance to Scotland.
