Immigration risks and FOI 10:01am on 10 Nov 2009 This is going to happen more and more, so I wouldn't beat yourself up over it. Burying bad news has been changed from waiting for attrocities to hiding it under an avalanche of information.

The result is a win/win for whomever is sitting in the hotseat - do as you will, delay the release of information until years after decisions, publish anaemic FOI responses and then hold the moral high ground in any subsequent furore. The debate moves from what was done, to "why are you digging up old news?".

Pubs aren't dying - they are evolving 4:18pm on 31 Jul 2009 Just noticed - the table you use showing a net increase in pub is most amusing.

Also moderately useless, since there is no way of knowing value of the increase. Overall, 17% said they go the pub "more often" than they used to. However 25% current smokers go less. Since we don't know how many times either actually visits the pub, or what the spend is, then its value in backing your argument/points is fairly limited. Oh wait, it was compiled by the ONS and had a massive 4,300 respondants - in that case think there is a disclaimer somewhere stating that you can use any of the tables to back up any particular argument you feel like.

Pubs aren't dying - they are evolving 3:14pm on 31 Jul 2009 Pubs aren't closing, they're evolving. Genius. Banks weren't in trouble, they were evolving. My company is evolving 50 staff to be differently employed.

So local pubs, that are part of the fabric of small villages, shutting down and "restraunts" selling overpriced microwave meals replacing them is something to be lauded ?

Don't mistake the ability to make a fast buck with an evolution in customer needs/wants.

I used to work in the analysis department for a very large pubco - as soon as the assett (pub) didn't perform to x% EBITDA, it was offloaded; the land value being the driver. So a perfectly good pub (ie serving a community, no drugs, no problems with the police) would be closed because - at that precise moment - its estimated profitability was a few points below the return of selling it to developers.

To assume that the functionality of a pub is expressed solely in the value of its bottom line is incorrect. Its the sort of argument that leads to us having Tesco's and the ilk taking over - "if people wanted to shop in smaller stores, there'd be no need for a supermarket". Forgetting that the bigger organisations are prepared to take a short hit to kill the competition.

Sad, sad days.
Does Europe need hedge funds? 3:55pm on 09 Jul 2009 Watching a 30 minute java presentation on "how money works" does not mean that whatever you say is right. Flicking through wikipedia for a tidbit of information without placing it in context, then twisting it suit your own predetermined stand point is laughable.

Reading about half of the comments on Peston's blog is, frankly, cringeworthy. As to the other half; thanks for actually enlightening.

Moderators; can you not do something about the few consistent posters who just reiterate the same point ad nauseum ? It adds nothing to blog.

And the answer is "yes". To say otherwise is to ignore the fact that when a business is making money, by default it must be needed. Can't think of many profitable companies that aren't doing so because their service/product isn't required or desired.

Before suggesting that Mr Peston is biaised or guilty of lazy reporting, why don't you go read the terms of the RTC and see if you can work out what the difference between that and Paulson proposal is ?

I'll give you a hint; its the entire point of the blog......
