Take part in BBC iPlayer Day this Friday 11:36am on 10 Dec 2008 Love the iPlayer but the major message I get from my own experiences, from talking to others and reading blogs like this is that it must be easier for people to watch iPlayer on their TV rather than their PC. For me this means making iPlayer available on Apple TV...

I realise this is a complex issue and that with so many different devices to try to be compatible with, and manufacturers/other companies having their own vested interests, it's a thankless task.

But please keep us up to date with which devices are being targeted - there was a mention of Apple TV compatibility in Januray by Ashley Highfield, and nothing since!

Sports Personality shortlist announced 5:45pm on 02 Dec 2008 Good to see such lively debate - but maybe for once we should be happy that there is such great competition, rather than other years when it's been a struggle to find a worthy winner, let alone 10 good nominees?

I'd say all 10 fully deserve their places on the shortlist - but you could equally make the case for quite a few others - Mark Cavendish, Shane Williams and - if you go by the BBC's published criteria - Cristiano Ronaldo (can't believe I'm saying that - surely this award should be for only those who represent GB or have a British passport?).

Personally I'll be voting for Chris Hoy and Nicole Cooke, in the hope one of them picks up the award on behalf of all the other cyclists - including Victoria Pendleton and Cavendish.
A change in the Weather 09:55am on 24 Sep 2008 I like the new design a lot, the layout's clear and the personalisation is good.

But I'm afraid I still won't be using the site much - for the reason that the forecasts aren't that good. Other online sites have, in my experience, consistently proved more accurate and up to date. Friends and colleagues all agree with me to a man (or woman)....

So good work on the web front but please sort the forecasters out!

Totally agree that Obree and Boardman contributed a great deal to laying the foundations of our current success. The contrast between Boardman's technical, leave no stone-unturned professionalism and Obree's maverick, sheer guts approach made their rivalry so compelling and appealing to the media and general public.

You could argue that elements of both approaches can be traced in the current set-up (although Boardman's influence is inevitably more pronounced due to his position in British Cycling).

Fine rider though he was, not sure if you can say Robert Millar's influence was quite equal to those two - unfairly or not, I'd see him as more of a cycling enthusiast's hero rather than one known to the public at large. Looking forward to reading that recent biography of him though (and very much enjoyed 'The Flying Scotsman' film about Obree).

I agree this isn't exactly cutting-edge stuff, and I'd be worried if this was the only output from the Beeb - or from John - on the Euros.

But this is an extra - John is still providing excellent commentary via FiveLive, and I'd bet he isn't getting paid any more to do this blogging as well.

I'm sure a lot of people will enjoy this, so why shouldn't it be offered as an extra?
Find, play and share 11:36am on 05 Jun 2008 This thread seems to have got woefully off-topic. I think the aim of this blog entry was to highlight the new 'Topics' feature, but from a content perspective (what is available through it, how it showcases material from the BBc and in future other providers do). That's why there's an entry on this 'editorial' blog, and a more 'techie' one describing how it's put together over on the BBC Internet blog.

Pete seems to have chosen the China topic as an example because there's a lot of content on this one at the moment, because of the BBC's focus on China this year both through news and features. It's just an example to illustrate what the topics feature does, so shouldn't we be talking about what we want to see on the topic pages do, rather than focusing on what content is in this one particular example? Even disregarding that point, I also find it curious that people posting here, claiming to want more transparency of coverage, in-depth coverage etc, have chosen to criticise something which is attempting to make information easier to find. In this case, the medium is the message - we're talking about ways to find coverage and content, not our opinions on that content!

So - I think that the topics feature is a promising start - with the web expanding, and content proliferating, it's becoming more important to be able to navigate through it to find the information you want. I'd like to see links to other sites' content on a particular topic, and eventually I'd love as a user to be able to type in my own topic, however obscure, and for a page to dynamically generate on that topic.
