What? Straw struggled to remember his script in his opening. Huhn showed himself to be little but a spinner and Sayeeda Warsi was, as always, a waste of air time. Bonnie Greer was in the wrong place.

The audience was dominated by childish ranters e.g. the one who said something about buying Griffin a ticket out of the UK...it was playground level jibing yet a got a big cheer. Utterly pathetic (there were exceptions).

As for Griffin, if he'd been given more time to talk he might have finished the job of hanging himself.

I think the blame for a wasted opportunity lies with those who chose the panel. Cable, Hague and Field would have been better.

We tend to think of "having a job" as being on a payroll, getting paid. To each individual it is the paycheque that counts. But in real terms a job means producing something valuable. It is extra output that counts. People who are paid more than the value of their output harm others. We can create jobs by subsidies; it is a short term problem solution at best. Reducing waste (please see above, and add reducing mindless waste on expansion of so called "higher education" to 50% of pop.)is a better long term solution (for those who expect to live long enough for it to matter).
An embarrassment of cuts 09:00am on 06 Oct 2009 An alternative to working longer is to consume less. There are many sensible ways we might save (in real terms). Less silly stilletto heeled shoes, less Chelsea tractors, less pay for footballers to squander, less (no) fashion industry, less senseless stick on guitar picks on womens' fingers...the list goes on.
An embarrassment of cuts 08:48am on 06 Oct 2009 Why are pensions discussions so often in money terms? It has no intrinsic value. If we are tending to live longer we are likely to be consuming more. So we shall need to produce more. All other things equal, that will mean we will have to work longer. Shuffling money just affects how we share out the real output...we will be better off only to the extent we produce more (collectively/on average). If we all worked to 66 we would all get one year less in pension. We would not be worse off. If we alll have less money we are not worse off. Money is just debt we owe to ourselves (and it says so, on paper versions).
The Irish vote 'Yes' 5:06pm on 03 Oct 2009 I'll laugh my pants off if Europe now makes Ireland a net contributor instead of a benificiary. They'll need money from somewhere to bribe the Poles and Czechs.

Always seems like a decent bloke. Sadly there is a degree of chavyness about him which may influence youngsters. I think the BBC has a duty to ask him to cover his tattoos. The tee-shirt as well; the point of paying a fee is (I think) to allow the BBC to produce quality, commercial free programmes (though with East Enders, wall to wall football and strictly come dancing they are falling down badly).
House prices: Too good to be true? 09:46am on 03 Oct 2009 How do we determine "the correct" price level? It seems likely that as we become more affluent the "natural" level of house prices will rise more than proportionately. As the population increases and there is a shift to more single occupier homes, pressure in the housing market will lead people to use more of their increased incomes to buy property. Added to that necessity aspect (we all need somewhere to live) there is the luxury goods/veblen effect. So many people in this country measure their own personal worth by the house they live in (as well as the car in the drive).

I think determining "correct" prices by looking at historical relationships (say 3.5 X income) ignores demographic and social changes. And if interest rates look set to remain low for some time there is a sound financial/economic reason why there is upward pressure on house prices, just like all asset prices. Please let me be right; I want prices to rise again before I trade down! Spread the word, less of the pessimism please.
Lily brings a smile to TMS 10:42am on 27 Aug 2009 I agree 100% with kafkali at 3. I listened to the LA interview. It was the worst since Eric Clapton. Both were dreadful...both EC and LA were utterly vacuous. I think I expected that of LA, on the few occasions I've seen her on TV she has been the same, EC was a big disappointment.
Ponting left laughing as England get the script wrong 10:43am on 11 Aug 2009 Ramprakash is now scoring runs in Div. 2. That means very little.

The sparrow, above, talks of age effects. Snooker players are, mostly, over the top by late thirties. I think The world bowls championship has been won by an over 40 only once in recent years. Both are less physically demanding than 5 day tests...which we are likely to need if we are to win. Unfortunately most people start downhill in their thirties (or perhaps earlier). The only thing that seems to improve with age is sexual prowess...honest it does,ladies!
What did you think of the show? Guest: Ronni Ancona 7:33pm on 24 Jul 2009 Very rarely do female comedians (can I say comediennes?) seem funny to me. Jo Brand has seemed funny once or twice, Lucy Porter has achieved the same but beyond that most seem poor. Ronnie Ancona can be excellent..but unfortunately she didn't do any funny stuff tonight.
I think the only commedienne I have heard who was really funny was an American woman who was a funny version of Joan Rivers. I think her name was something like Mobs Mabberly. I wonder if it is a gender thing. Do women find comediennes funny? Does Victoria Wood make them laugh? Dawn French? (Saunders seemed good at times to me).
