Southern teams hold autumn supremacy 10:30am on 30 Nov 2009 rossmore01 - fair point re Gav and Shanks. Was just thinking what the dream Wales XV might be if all were fit and active. Always feel it's a little harsh that Shanks is generally the one to make way, although he's not been pulling up Taffside trees for the Blues.

Re the Lions - don't forget the involvement Gatland, Edwards and Howley had in that coaching team. Must be more to the north-south divide than just that, although Geech is clearly a genius.

DrRichie - did mention England's 40% injury-rate. Certainly a factor. Agree 100% re Ireland.

PorterRockwell - Dallaglio reckons England will win the Six Nations. Thoughts?

With the exception of Grizzly Hayes, it's not going to be a problem. Reminds me of England in 2001 - for the pack experience of Johnson/Dallaglio/Hill/Back, see O'Connell, O'Callaghan and D Wallace. Lob in the young sparklers like Kearney, Fitzgerald, Earls and Sexton and you've got a tasty recipe.

Dangerously Optimistic Dave - when a man with your moniker says he's never going to get excited about the autumn internationals again, truly the IRB have something to worry about.

0darroch - good point about negative team selections. Re the Six Nations, at the mo my finishing order would be Ireland, France, Wales, England, Scotland, Italy. I think... Yours in full?

zcdsc - I'll dig out the dusty yearbooks from the Fordyce Statistics Attic, but I've got a pretty good feeling the record's an old-fashioned stinker. France's win in NZ this summer was the only win over Tri-Nations opposition, unless we count the glorious oh-so-close-to-immortality deeds of the Lions in July...

extant - good work with the reviews son, but didn't that book come out in 2008? No matter how good it is - and your reviews indicate it is - it might struggle to get the nod for the best sports book of 2009. PS Did you just have those reviews to hand?

Personally I'd have him in there, and I wouldn't pick Erinle at 12 - sure, Jonno's worried about Nonu, but you need an inside centre with a decent pass, and even if you're Erinle's biggest fan you wouldn't claim he has that.

Croftalicious - agree entirely that the your namesake is the future at 6. What worries me is why he's been a shadow of his Lions self for England this autumn. Is it something he's doing, the natural result of those highs and exertions in SA in the summer or the result of the way Jonno and Wells want their forwards to play?

TrugbyC, bathandlancsfan - yup. Look at the younger players that the Wallabies and All Blacks have blooded/given experience to this autumn. England favour rugged experience over young dash every time. Really thought Lawes would get a start at some point, and that Foden/Tait would too. Worry that the veterans-first policy will bite us on the bottom come RWC 2011.

Ste1000 - good point duly noted. Big fan of Monye on the wing, too - was awful watching him having his mauve 'mare at 15 in the first half.

pascoty - from what you're saying about lack of leadership on the pitch, I'm guessing you're not a big fan of Borthwick as skipper. Who would you rather see in charge?
Purple England left with red faces 11:01am on 16 Nov 2009 Interesting that you should mention Ian McGeechan, James. More than a few pundits bandying his name around in the aftermath at Twickenham. Whether he'd actually want to be involved is another thing, and in any case Johnson's position is pretty secure.

It's more likely that changes would be made underneath him. Lots of votes at the moment for Toby Booth at London Irish - Brian Ashton was intending to bring him in as his forwards coach before he got the boot - and that might also bring the best out of Brian Smith. Still think too that it's a crying shame that Shaun Edwards is 130 miles away in Cardiff during international weeks...
