Merry Christmas 7:24pm on 21 Nov 2009 It has now become painfully obvious that the entire 60 jobsworth sheep of the assembly (apart from a couple of cowardly, secretive, Conservatives)want FULL powers for the assembly and eventual stand alone 'independence' for Wales.

Helped by a Welsh media (both press and TV) which has entirely forgotten the meaning of the word 'impartial' Wales is drifting headlong into the unknown. Maybe if the Welsh language had not been viewed as an essential tool in the Plaid created multi-faceted "Welshification" of our birthplace, the nationalist bigots might have got away with it.

As things stand though, I foresee huge problems ahead for Wales. The arrogance of the nationalists will eventually prove too much for the ordinary non Welsh speakers.If as promised/threatened by internet nationalists, only Welsh speakers will be able to obtain worthwhile jobs here, there will eventually be an explosion of discontent.
Any attempt on my part to further describe the outcome will surely lead to opportunist nationalists comparing my words to someone else who prophesied a certain 'dampness' in our streets.

The rush to full devolution and then independence will not pass peacefully. Even if 'independence' arrives, it will not be a permanent, or even long lasting state of affairs.The mass of the Welsh people will realise their error, and provided the Welsh nationalists have not abolished democracy by then, will vote the whole rotten bunch back to the obscurity from whence they came.

It has (somewhat gleefully) been pointed out to me, that my spelling of the word 'referenda' as 'referendi' was a mistake.

In my defence I wish to point out that whilst 'referenda' is correct for six days of the week it has long been regarded as de rigueur on Sundays to use the 'referendi' version.

If this does not satisfy those of a pedantic nature. I was also still dwelling on Cardiff City's £100million purchase of promising Patagonian midfielder Alfonso Referendi.

I would be willing for both of the above to be entered in Betsan's "Lame excuse of the month" contest.
What if ..? 12:49pm on 15 Nov 2009 We in Wales may, in the next couple of years,be asked to vote in a referendum to decide whether the assembly should have further powers.

Now when I was younger and substantially greener than the green, green. grass of home,I looked on referendi as being probably the purest, cleanest, and fairest form of democracy available.

Oh the innocence of youth!

Nowadays referendums are held only when the government wants them to be held. The timing of the referendum being exactly when, after much polling, the result can be almost guaranteed to be what the govt. wants.I can still remember hearing IWJ (at a recent Plaid conference) shamelessly stating (on BBC camera) that he would not call a referendum if there was any chance of it being lost!!!!!!

We also find that the vast resources of government influence the result in their favour.

But! When something goes wrong, and the government lose the referendum, they are not too concerned....they merely arrange for another one. This goes on until eventually (possibly from exhaustion) the electorate seem to give up, and government finally win.
You will note however, that as soon as a referendum is 'won' in government's favour, all talk of a further referendum disappears.

So it will be with the next referendum on assembly powers. If the assembly win, that'll be it...no more referendi on that topic...However, if the assembly is defeated...Any guesses on just how quickly ANOTHER referendum will take place? They in their arrogance will dismiss what the people of Wales vote for, and behind closed doors calculate just how soon they will seek our opinion again!..and again...and again..until they get the result they want.

This is exactly what has just happened in Ireland, with the two referendi over the Lisbon Treaty...they got their result, and so there won't be another referendum on that subject.

The very worst example of govt. "gerrymandering" though are the two devolution referendi.
I, and many others were shocked both by the way they...particularly the second one...were orchestrated.
Equally, the attitude of the Plaidos over any discussion of a third and final referendum on devolution really is sickening. Have these people no sense of fairness or democracy?
Democracy!!!! not a word that means much to the ruling assembly clique. In fact,by their disgraceful 'use' and manipulating of referendui procedure, it is now becoming increasingly difficlt to find any signs at all of democracy in today's Wales.

Surprise surprise...the biggest (smallest?) of them being our flip-flopping friend the deputy first minister.

As far as I can work out, he is against nuclear power everywhere except on Anglesey!!!!!!
Careful now, this has shades of IWJ's Questiontime debacle when Glenys Kinnock(of all people) wiped the floor with our Ieuan over the sainted Seimon Glyn. Something incidentally a helluva lot of us would love to see again...where's the video BBC ?

Our diminutive deputy seems to be making a habit of facing both ways at once. A position that entails no little amount of extremely fast spinning,..sorry rotation.

I suspect that each seat might be subsidised by the increasingly frustrated (and poorer) Welsh tax-payer,to the tune of around £84 per seat.

Which is almost exactly the subsidy per seat on the Ieuan-Air Cardiff to Anglesey flights.

So the rampant assembly "Self-Justication" expenditure continues. It is little wonder then that more and more are now looking on the Assembly as merely a temporary boil on the backside of Wales.

Just think of the relief when it gets lanced !

I am sorely tempted to suggest that you are on some kind of bonus/commission for puffing up the forthcoming choosing of our blessed new 1st. minister.
Of course, you know by now that I would never even contemplate such jiggery-pokery.

Stonemason. Just to point out that your figure of only 6721 voters being needed to change the result from YES to NO, is too generous to the YES 'side'.
In fact, it would have needed only 3361 voters to have changed from YES to NO to have resulted in a No result.

To have a referendum which decided constitutional change run the same as say, a general election, is simply crazy. I suspect that the nationalists/devolutionists on here know damn well that the whole Welsh referendum debacle was farcical.

Their mantra "Thats democracy" shows either their complete ignorance of the constitutional situation or, more likely, are cynical attempts to try and stifle the protests of those who know only too well that something stinks in their nervous refusal to have a third and final referendum. This in spite of the fact the second one was allowed after the first resulted in an overwhelming 4 to 1 victory for those against devolution.

There must be a third "best of three" devolution referendum. I'm sure IWJ and Rhodri Morgan know in their bones that would be the correct thing to do. The fact that they both keep very quiet indeed about this shows clearly that they are afraid of the Welsh voters..they should be ashamed of themselves.
