Beckham to appear at closing ceremony on top of a London bus 11:53am on 15 Aug 2008 shanghaiexpat - David Beckham is the biggest British sports star in Asia and currently the US's top earning sportsman too. He is global. Leona Lewis was the #1 selling female artiste on the planet in 2007 including her fantastic global #1 hit 'Bleeding Love'. There are no bigger British stars, or indeed global ones.
Not quite what we thought 1:55pm on 13 Aug 2008 This seems to me to BBC jealousy and anti-Chinese prejudice. They did fire off real footprint fireworks for those there on the ground to see and, since they were unfilmable, inserted a sequence for TV viewers to get the effect of what was actually happening. A little girl mimed and since her voice was not good enough another child's voice was used. Big deal. Will the BBC stop broadcasting its 500 or so movies where actors are dubbed by someone else, or stop playing CDs where voices are enhanced beyond all recognition? It's the modern world, it's technology, well done China for the best opening show ever.

On another point the BBCTV commentary was dreadful. Politics was dragged in at every opportunity - we could hardly hear the music or enjoy the occasion because of BBC waffle about Darfur, Tibet, human rights, factory conditions - when the USA and UK entered I didn't hear anything about Iraq, Afghanistan, Guantanamo, Gibralter, Northern Ireland,. the Falklands etc.
Unpredictable politics 4:54pm on 12 Jun 2008 This is both principled and very clever politically. Last summer Brown soared into a lead when not in Parliament. Now he will have to fight a single issue by-election which he will certainly lose as the LibDems are supporting the Tories. If Brown does not fight it, it will go alongside his bottling the election and refusing to honour his referendum pledge as a sign he is fearful of public opinion. Davis will use his campaignto explain about the erosion of freedoms and esp the 42 day rule which polls say the public supports - they won't after it is correctly spelt out to them that it is they, not some dodgy foreigners, that are losing their ancient freedoms and liberties.
Bad night for Labour 05:57am on 02 May 2008 The turning point was the moment George Osborne said he would raise IHT to £1m. That burst of applause for the Tories has not stopped ringing since on almost everything they have suggested, while all that Brown and Darling touches turns to dust. It's the political karma. In London I find Livingstone epitomises what I dislike about Labour for whom I once voted - he believes he is a charming, cheeky chappie of the people and the disadvantaged. I can only see him as self-serving, arrogant, patronising, untruthful, out of touch with the mainstream while buying cheap friendship from increasingly peculiar minorities, believing London is hiself-justifying s by right. That's missing out the libelous bits. I cannot see Labour recovering from this because they lack the talent, the ideas, the money and the will.
