How would you make the weather forecast easier to remember? 6:08pm on 14 Sep 2009 Definitely make it less 'chatty', which tends to give less focus to the information that is being delivered, and have a more structured format.

I would guess that some 'focus group' somewhere suggested that the forecast was too rigid and the result was this matey "Well, it's been a lovely day in London, but not so nice in Manchester..." Rather than giving the information in a concise and easily digested format.

I have needed to take down the forecast in preparation for a hike or sea canoeing trip in the past, and the Shipping Forecast is ideal for this, but the general forecast is all but useless in giving the details that you need to focus upon.
You want me to WHAT? In the SHOWER?? 4:00pm on 05 Aug 2009 Re the 'Pee-in-the-pool' chemical. It is, as many such stories are, an Urban myth.

A nurse is struck off. 6:12pm on 16 Apr 2009 The Nursing and Midwifery Council panel seem to have conveniently taken the narrow view of this case, concentrating on the 'Professional Misconduct' of one of their members and not the wider issues that are being raised.

It just makes me even more concerned that, should I be in the unfortunate possition of having to go to hospital and not being able to make my own complaints heard, then I will possibly be in the same unfortunate possition as all of the patients shown in the Panorama programme.

It just says to me that I should beware if I have to go to hospital, as members of the Nursing and Midwifery Council panel may be in charge of my care!

Have some suppliers gone over to this new timing system now? Or, are we talking about the BBC Radio 4 LW transmitted signal that switches meters from one rate to another here? If so, I think that was only implemented in some areas. Many people still have either a separate timeclock (Oh, and you, the customer, pay for the electricity to power that as well) or a meter with a timeclock built in.

There used to be a tariff that had two cheaper rate times, one at night and a boost in the afternoon, but I think that was aminly replaced by the economy 7 system.

I'm not trying to sell a house, nor buy one, I have a standard mortgage which I took out in 2000 and my repayments are going down.

My employer buys my fuel for my car, but I do pay tax on private use of course, and I'm steadily paying off my credit card debt.

So, since I don't want to borrow any more than I have already, I don't have significant savings to worry about lower interest rates and I guess I'm spending about what I always spend on Christmas, I'm not yet being hurt much by the so called 'credit crunch'...
Dynamic demand: best kept energy secret? 5:43pm on 06 Dec 2008 I always wonder just how long will people change their activity at the indication on the wall?

How long before people thing 'blow this for a game of soldiers' and just pay for the energy when they want to use it?

I use a timer system on my washing machine, it delays the start time by 3, 9 or 12 hours, so I work out when the cheaper rate is on and set the machine to come on in that time then hang the clean washing out when I get up in the morning. Even doing that I rarely use more than 20% of my electricity consumption between 12:00 and 07:00am most months.

I also try to switch off as many items as I can, like PCs, TVs, lights etc., when not in use and I have fitted energy efficient bulbs to as many of the most used lights as possible, but always try to switch them off when not needed as well.

The most cost effective way to save energy is insulation. I intend to increase the loft insulation and get cavity wall insulation as well. This will be even more important for anyone using electricity as their heating fuel.

Unfortunately, despite what the Greens tell you, unplugging battery chargers and turning TVs off standby is only any good if enough people do it all together. The consumption of these units is too small, unless you have hundreds in your house, for you to notice much difference on your bills...

Oh, and I'm an accredited energy conservation engineer who trys to persuade industrial and commercial companies to save energy, to save money and reduce their CO2 emissions.
The backdated bills for prepayment meters 8:14pm on 27 Oct 2008 Having been a member of the ESI Prepayment meter committee for the opening of competition in 1998, many of the issues you raised were made at the time.

1st Token meters were supposed to be going to be eliminated. Those are the ones with a cardboard card that you have to put into the meter. I still see cardboard tokens on sale in my area today.

The problem with cardboard tokens is that there's no feedback of the meter reading to the system and no way to automatically alter the meter tariff through the system.

2nd Keys - these systems allow some feedback of the meter reading, and possibly some way to program the meter, but this depends upon the system in use.

3rd Smart Cards - these allow companies to control the tariff and put new settings on the meter.

Back in 1998 the old electricity suppliers did not want to allow pre-payment meter customers to change supplier. The argument was they would have debt, but I now think the real reason was they could be charged higher prices for their electricity and interest on their debts.
Should we pay to park at a hospital? 7:56pm on 27 Oct 2008 I've just watched a Labour minister justifying parking charges as being a legitimate fee to cover expenses.

Why then are the car parking fees at hospitals so high? What makes their car parks more expensive than any other level bit of tarmac in a car park in town?

His statement about the person whose Mother had died whilst they fed the machine was, as far as I'm concerned, insulting. Complaining after the fact is too late in these situations, her mother died whilst this poor person was trying to pay the car parking fee. For goodness sake when did the Labour party abandon compassion?

I've visited people in hospital and the car parking fees are something that I would have expected from the Conservatives, not the Labour party.

Or, is there any difference now?
