Hmm, 10 days between blogs, harldly 'keeping up-to-date' Robert.
Charging for online news 01:53am on 07 Aug 2009 Newspapers ceased to have value when they prohibited wrapping chips in them.

As for charging for internet news I would not willingly pay for any of them. Even the BBC site contains little news and lots of opinion, a bit like the Daily Mirror 30 years ago. For example (from BBC story)

THE NEWS: The Bank of England's rate-setters have decided to pump another £50bn of new money into the economy in their programme of quantitative easing.
OPINION (from same article): BBC economics editor Stephanie Flanders said that the Monetary Policy Committee's (MPC) £50bn expansion of the programme had surprised many in the markets.
MORE OPINION: Stephen Timms, financial secretary to the Treasury, said he thought the Bank had made the right judgment.
AND MORE OPINION: There will now be increased focus on the Bank's latest economic projections, which will be published in the quarterly Inflation Report on Wednesday, 12 August.

To my mind the BBC built it's excellent reputation on reporting just the facts, over the years it has turned more towards reporting in a magazine manner, to it's detriment. Still the best of a mediocre bunch though.

I just love you Chelsea tractor bashers, but I can never figure out what it is you dislike about them so much. It just has to be some sort of envy.

I have a 15 year old Landcruiser. It has done 176000 miles and I expect at least a further 10 years from it. Never had a problem with it from new apart from the electric windows.

Last weekend I picked up 2 door sets in it and took my son's band to their gig complete with all equipment. 200 mile round trip and no need for a Transit (which by the way is larger).

Most dry weekends it can be seen pulling my gang mower across the fields. Very bumpy but it doesn't mind. No need for a tractor.

The rest of the time it works as a people carrier accomodating 7 with ease and about the same size as a London black cab.

So what would you suggest, help the world out with THREE vehicles to the job of one?

Hence, envy is the only conclusion I can come to regarding people like you.
2009 is payback year 3:44pm on 15 Dec 2008 There are a lot of people on here thinking Gordon will get a thrashing in the next election.

As I recall at the last election we collectively voted an extension of term for a know liar. That is, you can no longer believe a single word of his promises but the electorate voted him in anyway. What on earth makes you think anything different will happen this time.
2009 is payback year 07:51am on 15 Dec 2008 I'm not at all sure it can work that simply Robert. If as this re-finance unfolds I decide I see a company worth investing in but the government choose a different competing company to bail out, I and others like me are likely to call foul.

I suspect we will not only call foul, we will lobby the relevent EU bodies to declare the government loan illegal.
Another Black Friday 2:34pm on 12 Dec 2008 Much as enjoy the comments on here and agree things are not looking as good as they were I can't help thinking things are not that bad either.

It was but a few decades ago that L S Lowry was painting matchstick men and matchstick cat's and dogs, entering the factory in their hobnail boots or pushing cycles.

Even today the same scene would be matchstick cars and matchstick mobile phones.

And surely we will not be seeing Dicken's style workhouses in the foreseeable future.

Nah, things ain't that bad after all.

The German steelmaker and engineering company ThyssenKrupp has begun talks to reduce working hours at its steel production facility, the German daily Handelsblatt reported.

I first need to evaluate if this is a company that can not be allowed to fail, either because it is stragic, employs so many, or is critical to the defence of the country.

If the answer is yes, then you get the money but there are a couple of strings attached.
1) the entire board must resign and are barred from holding office for 7 years.
2) the new board will consist of 30% government appointed directors.
3) The board will be paid a maximum of 10 times the lowest full time employee, no bonuses, no options.
4) The company and possibly the entire sector with be flagged to the competition commision. When recovery eventually comes this business will never again be allowed to fall into the 'can not be allowed to fail' catagory. It will either be restrained in size or nationalised as appropriate.

Now Corus (HBOS, NR, etc), do you want me to consider your request?

Best thin Iran can do right now is invite the Russians along for some 'joint navel exercises'. Otherwise I can see Israel doing a pre-emptive on those nasty land grabbing Iranian's and getting US/UK involved in another shock and awe for WMD, no regime change, no oil grab.

There are some later stats on the web but they all basically point to Canada producing 12% of the US's grain output with 10% of the population of the US. They are grain richer.

Though the story is not quite correct. US's Green River is said to be the worlds largest oil sand reserve, larger than Saudi's reserves but not politically acceptable to mine it, at the moment. Last I heard oil sand is costing Canada about 47 dollars a barrel to produce so at todays prices they are now making a loss (oops!).

Add to this Canada's gold reserves, Uranium reserves and their lumber and they are not in a bad position for the second largest country in the world with on circa 30 million population.

Yen, I will be out of on the coming drop below 130 to the pound, just not sure yet where to get into next.
