100Mbps broadband - who needs it? 10:03am on 12 Feb 2009 There are companies looking at providing fiber by not digging the road. One of the most promising is using current domestic piping, this means using the sewerage system! It has proven to be allot less expensive than having to dig the roads up, its quicker to deploy, cheaper to provide, and means less jams for the drivers among us.

As for the need, who in their right mind would pay £1 for 30 mins of access?? This will never ever convince people to use it..

With fibre, when you pay for 20MBps you actually get 20 no matter what the distance from the exchange. You dont get 10 or 8 or 2 you actually get 20.

I bet on BTs copper network you can sign up for 20 MBps and if you live any more than 500 - 1000 m from the exchange your speed will degrade to who knows what.. If Bt were to offer us 100MBps i bet most of the country would only get say 20 over copper.

And thats why fibre is sooo important!

However the costs associated are not.

How can we play games, use the i player download updates, or software on a tarrif that charges us so much??

Remember the stories of people using it abroad and having a £25,000 bill for downloading 1 film...

Untill mobile broadband becomes cheaper to you it wont have the mainstream prevelance that fixed line does.
Digital Britain - are we there yet? 6:06pm on 23 May 2008 BT cant see a reason why we would use 100MBPS, thats because they are so short sighted and scared to pay for fibre. If i had to pay a setup fee of say £100 for cable to my house i would gladly pay it for the 100 MBPS as long as thats the speed that i got.

What gets me is that BT is still trying to roll out its 21C Network which will offer upto 24 MBPS. By which time the rest of the world will be miles ahead of us.

I wish people in this country would have the guts to commit themselves to investment in the future instead of just trying to catch up on the present.
